I've only ever driven a moped, with a theoretical maximum speed of 45 km/h, or 28 mph, but which in reality goes over 55 km/h, or 34 mph.

If there's one thing that pisses me off is me driving at 55km/h in a 40 km/h area, because some guy is about a meter away from me.

Also overtaking me in the said scenario, with several other cars on the opposing lane, about a hundred meters away.

My grammar seems to be leaving me, but yeah.

what's so bad about driving long distances in a manual? you really shouldn't be changing gears a lot unless its a winding road... in which case your already having to steer anyway...

just plonk it in 5th and away you go.

Because unlike an automatic, manuals don't have cruise control. And even then, you still have to be constantly aware for people stopping in front of you, you still have to shift when you start going up a hill, you still have to depress the clutch and brake slightly as you go downhill.

It's not fun.

No cruise control in a manual?!? Of course they have that. In an automatic you also have to be aware for people stopping in front of you. Automatic doesn't mean it brakes automatically for you :P. And even though it's more work, I'm sure a stickshift can outperform you on any hill, just because you've got more control.

It's a lot of fun.  :D

Although I must admit that driving an automatic with a big engine is really nice when accelerating at the traffic lights.

Don't get me wrong, I fucking LOVE stickshift. But it's not fun for long-distance driving.

Especially on long distances there's no difference. AT ALL. Only when you're repeatedly slowing down and speeding up again is where it makes a difference.

So because the only manual car you've tried has no cruise control, you assume none of them do?

My mum drives about one thousand KM most years in a manual, and it sure as shit has cruise control.

Start/stop traffic is the only real downside to a manual transmission. I suppose it can be a liability in the winter when you forget to remember that downshifting on snow and ice is a no-no. Like I said, I miss the days when Manual trannies were standard. It feels so obnoxious that you actually have to pay extra now for what is essentially a SIMPLER and MORE RELIABLE transmission.

point 2 was that an automatic gear box will weigh more than a manual and be bigger in most cases.
this weight will slow down the car when accelerateing, not a lot and a powerfull engine can over come it but a small engined auto compact will feel it.

that is befor the compexity of the auto get added in.

I still disagree... show me some weight comparisons between equivalent gearboxes or something. Even if auto is heavier, i'd imaigne that if the driver went on a diet it'd make a bigger difference.

As has been said... cruise control exists, stopping still exists, you don't always have to shift up a hill (except in an econobox i guess), and down hill... auto's are the one that are more likely to run away from you.

Also depends on the hill and what you're doing. Also, I've never driven an automatic, but with a manual I can get it to a full stop on the gears alone, which comes in useful if you need to stand still for a short moment and pull up quickly again (though it'll kill your gearbox if you do it for too long).

most of the time the car go's the diet as the weight is small (i.e. not lot more than a fat pasenger)but every kilo lowers the top speed of your car, and there are lot of bits you chuck for speed.

The cars weight has a small effect on its top speed...

It might create a small amount of extra friction on the rotating parts of the car, but the vaaaaast majority of resistance at high speeds is drag. That's why a Bugatti veyron which has about half the power to weight of a ariel atom, has a top speed that's something like 100km/h higher. One is heavy but slips through the air nicely, the other is light but doesn't so much.

On the subject of weight reduction, someone at uni did some calculations based off of a study and found that for a 200,000km life cycle, approximatly 7L of petrol was saved for every 1kg you saved. Not that much really..

Weight matters a lot in acceleration, and 1kg is relative. Driving long distances in a heavy US car, 1kg isn't going to do much. Driving in a city in a small Italian car, it's a lot more.
