Dead creatures in cages

How do I get dead creatures out of cages? This usually happens when I have invasions. Some trolls or goblins will get shot up by my marksdwarves and then rush into a cage. They will die in the cage shortly thereafter. At that point the cage looks like an empty cage (it will say "pine cage" and not "goblin cage (pine)") but if you press v on it while in stockpile it will say that there is a corpse in it. When I build the cages they look like empty cages and even viewing them does not show the corpse.

Currently I have the cages build outside so they do not start smelling, but is there any way to get rid of the corpses?

A guess: you might try forbidding the corpses (by looking at the cages with 'v'), then marking the cage for dumping (while you've got a garbage zone designated somewhere).  I would assume your minions will then pick up the cage, leave the corpse where it is, and then move the cage to the dump zone.

But that is all just guesswork.  :)

Indeed, and it's all wrong.

To remove a corpse from a cage, mark it for dumping (and unforbid it if it was forbidden on creature death).

Incidentally, corpses will never rot while stored in cages.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Incidentally, corpses will never rot while stored in cages.

By "it" you mean the corpse, right? I think that's the approach I've taken before. Loo(k) at the cage, hit +/- to highlight it, hit enter, hit enter again to view the body, then hit (d) to dump it.

If it's not rotten, set up a garbage zone near the butcher's temporarily, unforbid the corpse and queue a butcher animal job once it's there.

Yes.

If it's butcherable, you don't even need to remove it from its cage - a butcher will happily carry the entire cage into the butcher's shop, butcher the corpse inside it, then leave the empty cage sitting in the workshop (next to all of the butchering yields) when he's done. In fact, it's always been this way - I've seen it happen with caged naked mole dogs (which have a 2-4 year lifespan) from the chasm in the old 2D versions.

True, although the cage needs to be unbuilt for this to happen.  If the cage is built, the corpse will be left in it until you deconstruct the cage or dump and reclaim the corpse.

That's nice to know...so if the cage is unbuilt and within range of the butcher shop, all you have to do is queue the task. If it's too far away, you probably still have to dump/unforbid to get it butchered, as, in my experience, it won't be automatically hauled to a  refuse stockpile from inside the cage.

I find it quite annoying that one of the workshops with the shorter ranges of searching for inputs is also the most time-critical workshop, and the only workshop without working stockpile settings that get your inputs (and nothing else) taken to the workshop: you can't filter out sentients easily, and even if you do attempt to filter out vermin, they'll still get hauled to the stockpile, and must be manually dumped to free up the stockpile space.

You know, seeing posts about "veteran" players and realizing that I've only been playing a few months less then some of the bigger names like Footkerchief and Aqizzar and I've been playing longer than many of the others really just boggles my mind. It's kind of crazy to realize just how large the community has grown in these past few years and how many awesome people have joined. Not that it makes me feel particularly more "knowledgeable" then the average player that is. :P

Actually, I've only been playing since 40d. I've gone back and played the old 2D versions, even going so far as to write utilities for them because nothing else decent was available, but I didn't really start playing the game until about 2 years ago.

Also, I'm only strict about correctness of advice because too many people spread rumors about how they think the game works when said rumors have no basis in reality. Most annoyingly, one of those myths originated from none other than myself - specifically, the idea that elven caravans only bring crappy trade goods when they're happy, which later got interpreted as them bringing bins of cloth because of some weight/value ratio (in reality, the only problem is that they bring more of everything, and binned goods are the first to be loaded onto the caravan).

I've only been playing for 6 or 8 months or so, so anyone who played back in the 40d days is an old-timer as far as I'm concerned. :) I'm not always correct in my advice, but I'm very careful to make it clear when I'm sure about something or when I'm speculating.

The forum population changes over the years somewhat - members drop off, new ones join, fads come and go, etc.  I saw Sappho was back, and I remember her from years ago.  I haven't seen Slink around in quite some time, and I know there are others who have dropped off. 

"Veteran" is kind of a weird thing in this community.  One can be known as a "veteran" player without having played all that long.  It depends on your forum personality, more than anything.  Look at Vector - she's never even played the game but her name usually comes up in any discussion of legendary players. 

Basically, if someone sticks around, posts frequently, and can say something more helpful than blurting a meme, they might get known. 

Footkerchief is the search engine made...I'd say "flesh" but that seems wrong.  Quietust makes sure we speak of what we know versus what we believe.  SpiralDementia is the dude who made one of the most amusing threads ever.   :D
