I've seen many threads here about kobolds or other critters sneaking into fortresses and making off with items. I have never seen this happen. I have never received a "X has stolen an item" announcement, or even seen a kobold for that matter. Does this happen infrequently? Am I just not paying attention?

How long do your forts last, and what population? I have never seen a proper fort not have a thief.

Kobolds in this version are bugged, they die of stavation and their civilisation cease to existe around the year 4 of world generation.

People who want to have kobolds must mod in the [NO_EAT] tag for them to survive.

How long have you been playing dwarf fortress? If your first experience was with the most recent version than that isn't surprising as kobolds tend to starve to death in world generation in the current version.

I've been playing for a couple months, I've had fortresses of 200+ dwarves lasting for a dozen years. I've only played the most recent version, so that might account for the lack of kobolds.  Are there other critters that steal?

Rhesus Macaques are item thieves.  Buzzards and vultures steal food.  Bears and gnomes steal booze.  Those are all only found in specific biomes, and then only sometimes.

I have seen kobolds survive past worldgen in the latest release, but it's rare and seems to be dependent on luck - the kobold civilization has to be close enough to another civ they can steal enough food from to survive, and the kobolds have to actually steal food instead of socks or other junk.

Goblin thieves usually generate a "Snatcher! Protect the children!" message when discovered.

In my limited experience, they never steal anything or make off with babies, though, unlike the goblin baby snatchers of the past...they usually just get noticed by a cuddly kitten, stab it, and run off the map before your military can respond.

i can say for a fact, due to my(usually)horribly planned defenses, that goblin snatchers do indeed steal babies.

If you've never seen a thief, that just means they're really good.  I bet you haven't seen a ninja either.

Seriously, though, it's probably because kobolds die off in worldgen.
