*sigh*

Why can't goblins simply be a different culture? They're not overtly evil, really. When you look at the brutal excesses of the dwarves and the necrophagy of the elves, it's not hard to think of them as simply another way of looking at the whole survival thing.

True, they have demon masters, but Britain voted Tory and no-one's calling -us- vile, baby-snatching monsters. Hell, if they really can't breed, then baby-snatching makes perfect sense as a means of cultural and national advancement, and with a touch more refinement, would be pretty much what we had going on for several centuries in Europe. Entire nations (Romans and Mongols foremost among them) have been founded on worse things.

Please, Toady has tried to move away from "good" and "evil" (he's said so, repeatedly). Why can't we?

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

I'm gonna go with the idea that they never evolved death - which would require a situation where death wasn't useful, I.E no bad stuff like radiation and resource scarcity, so extremely old gobbos could keep on helping their offspring. Obviously this isn't DF's world, so they had to come from elsewhere.

My solution - gobbos came from a land of plenty and were trapped in DF's much harsher reality somehow. Their culture couldn't cope, and things started to get ugly, more and more warlike as it became clear they weren't returning to the old ways. Since a lot of them were already probably pretty old, they could absorb the technology of other races rather quickly, but their nomadic hunter-gatherer lifestyle didn't mesh well with farming, so pillaging and raiding was the easiest option.

Maybe it's a courtship ritual. Whoever hunts the biggest animal and gathers the most stuff gets the chieftain's daughter.

which means the goblin would be pair off with some Demonic hellspawn daughter.
that would range from animal that twisted into a shape of man to flying eye ball and every thing between.

That is pretty close to what goblins actually do. (They have a tendency to have demon leaders.)

this could explain why we have Night creatures.
Too many goblin demon love children in their forts, that they just gave them all a shovel and kick them out.
