Gear assemblies and vertical axles?  I need to build a 2 level pump stack above my rivers z level.  So I gotta run power to the top pump

Channel out the level above or below and then build a gear assembly or a vertical axle in the empty air (make sure it has something to connect to. Gear assemblies will take and move power in any direction but vertical axis will only move power up and down z-levels.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

building a windmill above the upper pump should work for small pumpstacks

Should you fail to comply, strict !!disciplinary actions!! will be taken. Also, we feel we should remind you that one of the "criminals" on your list is the chief medical dwarf. If he ends up too badly injured to do his job, you will be fired. Out of a magma cannon.

So if I'm using a water wheel?  Do I build a vertical axle directly over the waterwheel (center tile)?

Go look at the wiki page on pump stacks, you only need to provide power to the lowest level in your situation if you use a pump stack, as power is transferred between the pumps.

The wiki said u have to supply power to the top most pump

The wiki says you *can* power the entire stack by powering the topmost pump.  You can also power the entire stack by powering the bottom-most pump, or any in-between.

Nm.  Just reread, said whatever pumpstack.  I'm having problems running from the same z level of my waterwheel to a pump stack.  I've had to use all gear assemblies

Are the waterwheel and a portion of the pump stack on the same z-level? If you can use all gears but not any axles, you're not setting it up correctly.

There are three types of axles: vertical, horizontal (East / West), and horizontal (North / South). Each of these transmits power to two tiles only, compared to a gear assembly's six, and can connect to another axle of the same type, a gear assembly, either tile of a pump, or the centre tile of a waterwheel or windmill. Diagonal connections are not permitted.

Vertical axles cannot transfer power between tiles on the same z-level. They transmit power only to the two tiles directly above or beneath them.
Horizontal axles cannot transfer power between tiles on different z-levels. E/W axles transmit power only to the two tiles directly east or west of them (ie. to the right or left). N/S axles transmit power only to the two tiles directly north or south of them.

It's one of those things that's pretty simple once it all clicks into place, but completely incomprehensible until then.

If you're going straight up, the easiest solution is to power the top pump with windmill built on top, presuming you have wind. 40 is required for 4 pumps... so on.

If you're moving laterally at all, it's easy enough to power the stack with several windmills, one on each pump. (Or pair of pumps with 20 wind. 40 will do 4, but... yeah, you're not really gonna need THAT much water, unless you're really pouring water somewhere. (Obsidian, Magma)

So you've got a water wheel, and no way to reach with axles? If you show us a pic of the area, that should show us the problem.

^ Add a 'probably' there, my bad. Sometimes there's simply no room for axles between the necessary gears.
