And Then They Just Left The Body!
« on: October 03, 2011, 05:56:21 pm »

So every now and then, a forgotten beast comes wandering along in the vague direction of my fort, and I send the squads out to go welcome it and put a lei around its neck.  The problem is, once the beast is dead and I start mentally tallying how many barrels the meat will fill...they forget all about it.  At first I thought it was a distance issue, so I hacked out a shortcut for them to take.  They made a bee-line for some luggage left by migrants who'd died in those parts, but not a second glance was given to the beast, even though I told all of my butcheries to start butchering.  Even more infuriatingly, a glance at units showed that several of these idiots had No Job.  In other words, tasty meat and beast juice is a lower priority than *NOTHING*!  Seriously, what's a person got to do to get these Dwarves to bring home the two-headed bacon? >_<

Hmm.  Guessing you may need to enable gather refuse from outside in the Orders menu, if you haven't already?

Edit: of course, that's on the assumption the corpse is outside rather than in a cavern - this may not be the case, in which case I'm stumped!  :)

Are you sure the forgotten beast was made of meat?  Sometimes they're made of inedible materials.  Check its description.

Jhxmt, I could kiss you!  That seems to have been the solution. Thank you! :D

Sphalerite -- I didn't even think of that, so I'll have to keep it in mind for the next Beasts.  Thanks!

Also, beware, beware - shoeless dorfs trudging through an FB's poisonous blood or some other extract will be afflicted with syndromes most terrible!

Like, for instance, all of their skin rotting off. And nothing else. It has happened before.

As for the rest of the corpse, those bones'll last you a lifetime in bone crafts (assuming it has bones). On the downside, such a huge stack will clutter the workshop so severely that your bone carvers will work at a snail's pace.

(Don't even get me started on the cooks.)

Actually it's much worse with the bone carvers than the cooks. The cook will produce one massive stack of food each time they use a stack of meat/organs from the beast, and they'll use up the whole stack of ingredients.

Bone carvers will take one bone off the stack, take forever to carve it, produce the same amount of output they would have produced from a cat bone, and then take the next bone off the stack. All the delay, no big payoff.

Of course, maintaining food production may be more critical for survival, unless you have an imminent need for more bone bolts.

Bones seem somewhat bugged. Bone stacks from really large animals (yaks, water buffalos, horses, and upwards), will get your workshop purple masterwork-symbol level cluttered, even if it's not technically more bones than you'd get from a smaller animal.

If you need bones, keep a fowl industry going...or set your ethics to allow the eating (and thus butchering) of attackers. Dark strangler bone bolts, anyone?
