Frozen Synapse - First Bay 12 Tournament underway
« on: October 03, 2011, 12:36:16 am »

So now that everyone and their little sister has this game (speaking from personal experience here), there should be a great many DF players to match up against.

My ingame name is Volatar. Feel free to issue a challenge. Bonus points if it's a mode other than extermination. I currently am very bad at this game, but can't stop playing it :)

This game terrifies me.

I find myself sitting watching the icon, questioning whether I dare open it up to commence some multi-player action. I normally ignore it and do something less intense.

And only open it after mastering Aurora, that you begin playing - on a portable potato-PC - once you jump out? Meh.

My tag is Chattox (I think, been a while since I played). If I'm ever online, feel free to challenge me :)

Potato-PCs have a nasty tendency to turn on their masters.

Less than anthropomorphic supercomputers though.

I installed Aurora yesterday. Then I did a system restore to 5 hours earlier because the installer wantonly replaced files in my system32 folder. My gods.

On topic, I have it but have not actually played it because (a) it didn't seem terribly interesting, (b) everyone else had vastly more experience with it, (c) It's only two-player, (d) I'd still have to arrange a game with someone to play it multiplayer. (Yes, c and d are kind of contradictory, but d is more an effort thing and c is more an "If going to arrange a game, I'd rather do it with a game that more people can play...")

So I watched a video of this being played, and it looked interesting. What are peoples experiences playing it? Does the turn based multiplayer lead to extensive waiting? Are there grenades? Is rage quitting a problem?

I, so far, have found it to be the best thing since sliced bread. It really is tons of fun. I love tactics.

Does the turn based multiplayer lead to extensive waiting?

No. You are able to see the status of the player you are playing against (working on this game, playing a different game, in the menu, offline, etc), so you have an idea how long you will wait until your next turn. Most people seem pretty prompt. Even still, I find myself much faster than others when playing (I take much less time in Chess too, a good comparable game), so I simply run 2-4 games at a time and bounce between them while waiting for the other people.

Are there grenades?

Yes. There are the following:

Shotgunners
Machinegunners
Snipers
Rocket Launcher guys
Grenediers (grenade launchers)

Is rage quitting a problem?

No. Most people seem willing to accept a loss. Even if someone decides to ragequit and not play their turn, after 2 weeks the game will automatically end with a win for the non-quitter.
