Let's play Mount and Blade:Warband
« on: October 02, 2011, 05:19:19 pm »

I'm trying to get back into Mount and Blade:Warband so I figured I would do a let's play.

Ok we need to pick:
Starting Area
Character Name
Skill set(note:has to be useable with horses I don't need that much !FUN!)
Long term plan(how we are going to become king)
and anything else you want.

I'm planning on using native but if you pester me enough I guess we could try a mod.

Let the discussing began I will start the game tomorrow.

Go with the warlord path, carving a kingdom from scratch, preferably using one of the heirs, but it's more !FUN! if you do it without them.

Cattle quests for everyone.

Ok it seems we are going to start in the nords area have some dwarven name and Urist something. For skills it's bow/arrows/arrows/huge axe, small axe/huge axe/shield/throwing axes, or javelins/javelins/spears/shield. If we plan to start in/take over the nords it will be vaegir archer/cavalry(if we have cavalry) and nord infantry.

The game will start sometime tomorrow so get your voice heard before it's to late.

I highly, highly suggest you try the Native Mod Compilation or at least Diplomacy.

The only (possible) flaw in NMC is that when you start your own kingdom, you'll get your own troop tree, which might conflict with your plans if you're going to play fully Nord.

As for skills, I'd suggest you forgo any throwing skill. It's nice to have, but you're going to be at a disadvantage during siege defense since you'll run out of ammo fairly quickly unless you edit the mission templates to allow access to your inventory during sieges. I suppose you could mix crossbows and throwing, but in that case those precious points are better spent in another skill.

A Dwarven M&B LP, nice.

I've never been able to make a good enough army to conquer anything, I wanna see how you do it.

This will be a screenshot LP right?

I agree with pure crossbow.  Hey, when was the last time a Dwarf used thrown weapons?  They don't.  Dwarves use crossbows and bolts forged from their fallen foes.  Long story short, Dwarves use crossbows, and so should you.   :P

If you switch to crossbow though, your siege defense teams should include swadian/rhodok crossbowmen, which might be a problem if you're playing Nord/Vaegir.

Even if you don't use any other mods, download TweakMB.

Even if you don't use any other tweaks, activate the Cattle Tweak.

Seriously. Your patience will thank you, should herding cattle ever become a potential activity.

Also:

Hell yes.

You bet your ass it's "HELL YES"

But you better have some experience with the game, as battles such as this one will be rather common

Details!
Let us agree on : Long, pointy-sticks, or Britney, if you prefer.

Edit : Right.. Rhodok are a very solid faction with Warband. The crossbowmen, coupled with the officers (using spears) are a solid defensive line.
Not as deadly as the elite Nord infantry can be - with their map-wide shields and all that - but if you line them up nicely, even the latter will fail.

Speaking of Spears.. 'tis the best weapon for siege, if you have tons of troops yourself. You can do overhead thrusts, above the wall of your fighters, and kill foes while being safe yourself. (As it should be with spears) Took me a while to figure out how to do it : Target the air, and half-way through the attack re-direct it towards the enemy. Voila.

Really, I don't know how to sustain and train a large army, really.  I can't make a kingdom without conquering, and without an army, I have no hope.

What difficultly was it on?
88% with Auto-Block and Mouse Direction attacks. I wish i could say "maxed out" but blocking was still off for me. Not to mention chamber blocking. I haven't played m&b ever since. (T'was in January this year)
Max out athletics, fight in the woods, grab all the javelins and shields that enemies drop.. and most importantly have the fastest horse of them all!
Or was the woods part most important? Or the athletics?

Let your first capture be the richest city of them all. Limit the amount of horses to minimum (Unless you go for all Khergit army) as units like Swadian Knights are a bitch to pay for. Keep your leadership high, and overstack food and gold before even trying to do anything.
You can also - in my opinion it's acceptable! - change the troop upkeep modifier for garrisoned units. Cut down the pay for units that guard cities that is. It's somewhere in the files (eventually you can use an editor)
