Phantom dwarf blood?
« on: October 02, 2011, 02:02:06 pm »

hey this is my first post on these forums, i'm a complete newb at DF (only had several forts, all of which seem to succumb to total chaos :P)
i was just about to abandom my latest for due to its layout being simply too insane (and i keep learning things that i want to apply to a fresh fort)

so i mined a tunnel to the side of a river to flood the lower chambers, for the lulz, and an odd thing happened: everywhere the water washed, it left splatters of dwarf blood from a dwarf named "Udib Boatband" the strange thing is, i cannot find a dwarf of that name in my fort, living or dead. i assume i'm missing something here, but i thought it might be worth asking you experinced DF'ers :P

Are you sure he's not on your "u" list? Remember that the names on that list are in their native language, so while his first name would be Udib, his last named would not appear to be Boatband.

well i do have a deceased dwarf called Udib Kogankonad, could that be him? Wouldn't make much sense though, because he died in a corridor after going insane and killing one of my jewelers, a considerable distance from any water, also I just noticed a pond i designated filled near my farms for emergency drinking water also this mystery dwarf blood in it o.O

Obviously some dwarves stepped in his blood and went there to wash it off. Now the pool and the river are tainted with his blood forever!

(I once had a river that was permanently tainted with...carp pus. Ew.)

ok, it begins to make sense :P thanks for the info :) so i take it in the "u" menu surnames are given in dwarven, and elsewhere, they're translated?

Also, carp pus? lovely. how does one go about making carp exude pus? :D

Edit: corrected a dumb spelling mistake

At the top of his description page, it'll say Udib Kogankonad "Boatband" if it's him. Engravings, statues, and I guess blood-spatters use the translated last name, most other places use the untranslated name.

Dwarves have first names that are one dwarven word, and last names that are made of two dwarven words strung together. If you pay attention to them, you can eventually learn the dwarven words, for example, I learned from the last name "Uristavuz" that "Urist" means "dagger". I forget what "Avuz" means, though.

Best name I've got at the moment is a weaponsmith named "Metaldents" (Kelgeb). Or perhaps my militia captain named "Blotgranite" (Kodolok). No blood for them to clean up yet, though.

A hunter decided to be a dumbass, emptied the few bolts in his quiver at a carp and rendered it mostly immobile. Broken fin, I think. When the wounds got infected, they started leaking pus.

That carp was there for a looong time...

i checked, and neither of my two Udibs have the translated named "boatband" strange.. is it possible that a trader died en route to my fort without me noticing and its him? but wouldn't he show up in the "u" menu?

i guess i'll chalk this one down as mystery :P

p.s thats one of my favourite things about this game.. the attention to detail, what other game would have carp leaking pus into a river because their wounds got infected? :D
