Barracks design
« on: October 02, 2011, 08:47:20 am »

Is there any need to be efficient or creative with the layout of my barracks rooms? I remember in 40d that sometimes it was advantageous to leave small spaces for equipment closets so that you could force them to pick up certain types of weapons and ammo, but now I know there are uniforms and the (suspended) Arsenal Dwarf and all that.

So if I'm going to have 3 squads, do I need 3 barracks now? Is there a minimum number of beds, or minimum amount of floor space, or some other barracks layout consideration to follow?

Sorry if it's been asked before, but I couldn't find it with cursory searching.

I usually make my barrracks outside, so my dorfs don't  vomit their brains when figthing.

Ps:how do i make my goddamn soldiers to use armorstands and weaponstands?!?

Aren't armour stands and weapon racks decorative? I always put a weapons/armour stockpile in my outdoor barracks after I seen my militia retire all the way back into my fort to pick up that new steel breastplate.....

I think that armor stands and weapon racks are decorative in nobles' rooms, but if you use them in a barracks, then stuff will actually get stored on them.

Was the breastplate in the stockpile because the military set it down there, or because that's where a hauler moved it after it was made? I bet there's no way to have haulers move finished armor and weapons straight from the crafting location to a squad's racks. Once a squad has equipped it, if it gets put away it probably gets put away onto stands and racks (if you've put them in a barracks).

Well, NOT around the central pit of the fortress. Unless you like flying axedwarves and busy medics.  :P
(A shame. This tower training room was cool)

You can assign any number of squads to a barracks, to either conserve space, or just to have soldiers in the area, invid drill, training. armor stand settings to store squad equip and individ equip only seems useful when you have the dwarves only wearing uniforms on duty. The stuff gets stored their temporarily, then gets hauled off to the corresponding stockpile

Should you fail to comply, strict !!disciplinary actions!! will be taken. Also, we feel we should remind you that one of the "criminals" on your list is the chief medical dwarf. If he ends up too badly injured to do his job, you will be fired. Out of a magma cannon.
