Killing undead doesen't give happy thoughts
« on: October 02, 2011, 02:19:16 am »

Looks like fighting against undeads is only bad thing for your soldiers happiness. Normally, killing few dozens of goblins gives "took joy of slaughter" happy thought, but undead gives only "has been attacked by dead".

Is it part of game or is it bug?

would you be happy that your best friend's body was animated and attacking you and you had to put it down?

Try seeing it this way. Goblins are well-known hated creatures. Now imagine yourself, a dwarf striking it down. Feels good doesn't it?

Now imagine yourself fighting a mass of flesh and bone that used to be something alive. Rotting and decaying as it moved slowly towards you. Would you be happy?

[Although I think the thought 'has been attacked by the dead' is only to civilians, this happens too if attacked by ambushers or living enemies although it would just say 'has been attacked'] Not a bug and part of the game.

I'm not sure whether it's a bug or not, though I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't.

I've heard your dwarves don't get credit for undead kills anymore, since a recent change where the undead got a sort of hit point system (before which they were nearly invincible, as you had to chop them up with edged weapons, and decapitating a skeletal elephant is fairly rare), so it's possible they're supposed to get a "joy in slaughter" thought, but they don't because of that same bug.

So, if they "took joy in slaughter" against the undead before that change, it's probably because they're not getting kill credits for undead, if not, it's as intended. Anyone notice whether killing undead gave happy thoughts back when the undead couldn't be killed?

Is it certain that slaughtering undead doesn't give the joy in slaughter kill? In .18, I'm quite sure I had that tag pop up after slaughtering my way through a whole series of undead trolls.

90% of the time, when you kill an Undead, the kill doesn't actually register. Hit Point deaths don't count.

If you get a decisive kill, like a beheading, then it should count and you should get the thought.

It only counts as a proper kill if the creature is "struck down" (or "shot and killed") and leaves a corpse - undeads tend to "vanish" when sufficiently damaged, leaving nothing behind.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
