The Quest
« on: October 02, 2011, 01:14:10 am »

((Well, after my poorly thought-out idea of starting an RTD on the first week of classes went about as could be expected, I finally have some free time again. So, time for something different:))

Infinite power is something most people cannot even imagine. And you held it in the palm of your hand. You were, for a single moment, greater than even a god. You could have made and unmade entire planes of existence with nothing but a thought... but the instant ended. The power vanished. And with it went your memories of your past, driven out by the overwhelming force of that one moment.

The taste of power still fresh in your nearly empty mind, you open your eyes to see nothing but endless white surrounding you, marred only by yourself and a stone table sitting a few feet in front of you, it's surface covered with what appears to be some sort of gamepieces. An entire world is drawn out on it's surface, the pieces atop it ranging from castles to forests, from peasants to knights, from dragons to wizards. You don't know what sort of rules this game might have. But you instinctively feel that it's your move.

If you feel you have time, examine the board in more detail; educate yourself for the coming conflict.

Imagine a cool peice of sky-blue and milk-white marble about 3cm by 2cm and by 0.5cm, containing a tiny 2mm malacolite crystal. Now imagine the miles of metamorphic rock it's embedded in that no pick or chisel will ever touch. Then, imagine that those miles will melt back into their mantle long before any telescope even refracts an image of their planet. The watchers will be so excited to have that image too.

The game board is simple enough on it's own: a grid of squares, superimposed over a map of a single large continent. The pieces each seem to represent some important feature of the map, be it a location, person, or building. Focusing on a random castle for a moment, you suddenly find information flowing into your mind:

The kingdom of Resis
Population: 50,000
Wealth: Rank 3
AP: 5/10
Heroes: 0/3

You feel compelled to reach out and touch the piece as you think this information over, but also feel that doing so would constitute some form of irrevocable choice on your part...

While "everything" would likely take an inordinate amount of time, given the size of the board(You would estimate about a hundred or so pieces cover it.), you take some time to investigate a few more random pieces: A knight, a lake, a wizard, and some sort of monster.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Every piece you look at seems to give the same sorts of information, depending on whether the game terms it a hero, location, or monster. Your cursory scan of the pieces reveals the land to be mostly split between three kingdoms of roughly equal size(Resis, Tarnel, and Merix), with small pockets controlled by lesser rulers. Monsters and heroes seem scattered mostly evenly through the land, no two even near each other at the moment.

The only way to move forward is to try something...which side are we on, anyway? Does it matter?

Try to move the Wizard Ferendis closer to Kekeras, the Slumbering Beast. See what happens.

Find the most powerful dragon you can and have it move closer to a small town.  Let's make the dragon eventually the king of a massive empire!

See which empire allows you to move its pieces.

Touch the Kingdom of Resis, take it over, and conquer a small kingdom.

((Not right now, no. But I'll add one in before too long. It matters less than you might think at the moment. also, that's 3 to 1 for moving a monster, so: ))

You reach out to try and move one of the monsters, but are interrupted by a flash of light the moment you touch the piece. As the light fades, a featureless black figure, more a lack of presence than anything else, sits across the table from you. A voice echos through your mind as it appears, though the figure makes no discernible movement.
"So, you would choose the role of beastkeeper, of dungeon master, and dark lord? Monsterkind is more unified than any other side you might choose... but so too are all other sides unified against it. It is both the grandest and the most difficult scale to control, should you not change your mind."
