Need help with Cook
« on: October 01, 2011, 09:59:36 pm »

So I've been playing Dwarf Fortress for about a few days now and I've read tons of the wiki.  I have stockpiles for prepared food and other things like that but I can't seem how to get my cook to haul or anyone else to haul the food into the stockpile before it rots.  Any solutions?

Did you accidentally turn off gathering of food through the stockpile menu?

Does your food stockpile have the option for prepared food turned on?

Is there a path that dwarves can walk between the kitchen and the food stockpile?

Do you have dwarves who have the food hauling labor turned on and nothing better to do who can reach both the kitchen and the food stockpile?

Are any burrows in effect?

I would bet the meals you prepare are 10+ in stack and your food stockpile has barrels set to max and empty barrels laying around.

Solution: create food stockpile that accepts Food and only prepared meals, set barrels to 0 for that stockpile.

Did I guess right? :)

What does setting a stockpile to 0 barrels do?
It prevents anything in that stockpile from being stored in barrels.  Food items which need to be stored in barrels (such as booze) won't be stored there, while food items which can be store in or out of barrels (such as plants or prepared food) will be store there, but just piled on the floor instead of put in barrels.

What does setting a stockpile to 0 barrels do?

It means the food in that stockpile won't be stored in barrels. Most prepared meals are too big to fit in barrels (I think 11 units is the maximum for prepared food), which is easily solved by hungry dorfs!

I once had a couple dead war rhinos (elves!) butchered. Their meat yields, along with some other things, were made into a lavish meal. I don't remember the exact count, but I think that *rhino meat roast* numbered well in the 400s. I had it put in the emergency bunker because that'd ensure there'd be enough food there for when an emergency broke out :P

What does setting a stockpile to 0 barrels do?

In that case specifically, the scenario is following (with barrels enabled for prepared meals stockpile):
- there's stack of 11 roasts to be put in stockpile
- dwarf selects best stokpile to put it in - preferred with barrels enabled
- he checks if there's a barrel that can fit the meal
- no barrel can fit 11+ stacks of food so the job is not queued

Now I don't say that's how the code exactly operates, merely that's just my observation.

Now, if your stockpile(s) that accepts prepared meals doesn't allow barrels - dwarves won't try to put that meal in the barrel and just carry it to the stockpile.

Technically, it just prevents barrels from being assigned to the stockpile. If there were any barrels in the stockpile at the time, they'll get relocated to other stockpiles which permit barrels and accept their contents, otherwise they'll just sit there until their contents get used up.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Actually, if you have a stockpile with barrels set to something other than zero, food in stacks of size greater than 10 will still be stored in it.  They just won't store it in barrels.  Setting barrels to something other than zero doesn't force the stockpile to only accept food that can be stored in barrels.  It just means they'll use barrels when possible.

I could've swear I had this issue in one of the earlier forts of mine. Not very often, because I was running short on barrels and there wasn't enough barrels to keep all food in them.

If OP has all other ends covered, I don't think it'd harm to see if my suggested solution works. I'll try to check it some time later today on my running fort.
