Starving Baby and other small problems
« on: October 01, 2011, 05:29:38 am »

One of my dwarfs had a baby, then died in battle. Somehow the baby escaped and crawled back into the fortress, leaving her an orphan. For a while dwarfs would occasionally give her water or food, but over the past month or so, none of them have helped her. She's starving and thirsty and only 5 months old, and not going to make it to her first birthday so she can feed herself. I have idle dwarfs just standing around looking at her. Is there anything I can do? Any idea why this is happening?

That's hilarious. I wouldn't worry too much about the baby, they aren't useful workers at all, even when they grow up. The only ones I care about are the ones which make artifacts, and only because of their legendary rank.

Check to see if the people have feed/recover job.

One of the dwarfs just watching her starve is a nurse, whose sole task it is to bring people food and water. She's been idle for a while now. Must be a bug I guess.

Sounds like the dwarves have a death pool going.  I'm guessing they're betting socks on when she'll croak.  What?  Why's everyone looking at me like that?

I'm kind of hoping she'll tantrum before she dies. Can babies tantrum?

I would make some baby fight room. Add beasties one at a time with increasing size... If it takes down a groundhog, it cant be bad.

Well, she died. Now I've got a new problem: I've selected two dwarfs to start the military as crossbowdwarfs. They have bows, bolts, quivers, and leather armor available. There is a barracks and an archery range. But when I set them to train, it says "cannot follow order." Any ideas? The whole military system has changed a lot since when I last played (ages ago).

Do you have multiple targets in the same archery range? As in several targets all designated from one.

You just LET her die like that? You're a monster. The only humane method is euthinasia. By wooden spikes and a drowning mechanism.

I think you may have your crossbowdorfs in an active squad. If you have them in an active squad, they don't follow orders.

There are three targets designated from one target. How do I get my dwarfs to train crossbows? From scratch, I guess, since I have no idea what I'm doing anymore. And why is the new military so unfathomably complicated?

Yeah, you need to make sure archery ranges only contain one target, otherwise they don't work.

I think the best method found was:
T = Target
C = Channel
W= Wall
WWWWWWWW
CCT
WWWWWWWW
CCT
WWWWWWWW
CCT
WWWWWWWW

The channels are there so any bolts that miss don't break, each target is it's own archery range.

The channels are possibly un-necessary.

From what I've heard, the mother is the responsible one in feeding/taking care of the baby. If she dies then hope the baby is nearing childhood.

Also, did you make sure that the archery range has a straight (no channels in between) path to the shooter? They need a clear and unobstructed path to shoot.
