I'm looking for a Map-Making program...
« on: September 30, 2011, 06:31:18 pm »

I'm looking for a Tile-Editing, Map-Making program!

You see, I run a Roll to Dodge game over yonder at the Datarealms site, and I'm in need of a program that allows me to edit tiles and use those tiles to make maps so my players can use them.

I found one program by the name of "Tile Studio," and I really liked it. Unfortunately, after hours of work making sprites and experimenting, I found that Tile Studio was meant for making maps for working GAMES, and refused to export my maps in image format!

So I'm stuck. I need an easy-to-use, accessible program that lets me make tile-based maps.

If you have ANY clue as to something that might work for me, please post and include a link.

Thanks!

It looks it, but it isn't.

It's really a platform for RPGs to be played live over ze interwebs, and it's buggy as all hell at doing that.

You could try using Inkscape of similar to make simple vector maps for your game, if you remember to use layers it should be fairly easy to edit and organize.

Maptools used to be buggy, but b86 and onward are surprisingly stable.

Hexographer is good if you just want the maps.

In that it's surprising if it's ever sable, yeah. The start of every D&D session I've ever done has featured at least 10 minutes of getting maptools to do what it's supposed to, or sorting out connection issues, or whatever. The start of any new campaign is fraught with hellish issues and problems.

I'm even getting that crap out of the way early for today's session, loading it up 30 minutes early to make sure it isn't going to flip the fuck out.

Really? I've never had any problems with it. I do find it easier to use when you don't add in the complications of Hamachi, though. With Hamachi, connections drop like flies all the time.

Heh, every RP session I've ever done has featured at least 30 minutes of getting the players to do what the GM wants them to do.

Couldn't you save a screenshot of the maps on the screen in the program?

So....what exactly are your needs here?

AutoRealm has served my needs in D&D for many years. It's not online, it just does graphing paper, allows you to import graphics and text to the image, do measurements, add color....all that jazz. Which can then be printed out or shipped around as an image file.

http://autorealm.sourceforge.net/index.php

I don't have any images of the stuff I once did with it...but it's useful for scales anywhere from 5'x5', to anything you'd need.
