How the eff do I make my dwarves spar?
« on: September 30, 2011, 09:46:29 am »

I've set my single millitia squad to train all year round, minimum of 10 dwarves training at a time. They're all doing "individual combat drill", which I can't imagine is doing much for them.

Dorfs, y u no spar?

Edit: Wait, found out what I was doing wrong. Ugh. Sorry.

Dwarves will generally spar once they have equivalent skills in a particular weapon.

You can help this along by using small squads, but generally, I've found the training system to only be marginally adequate.

Well, I've settled for the good ol' method of releasing some stripped p.o.w's into their barracks while they're training and watching the body parts fly around.

Gobbos are remarkably better suited for training purposes than dark stranglers.

That's always a good way to go about it. Except for that one time it bites you in the ass... Like that one time I routed that ONE goblin master thief into the barracks. I mean come on he's one goblin against 6 dwarves this will be grea-OH MY GOD HE STABBED 3 OF THEM IN THE BRAIN! And the other 3 are now cowering in the corner D:...

Yeah... true story... He than signle-handedly butchered 20 other dwarves, left those 3 from the corner alone than left...
I didn't even hunt him in adventure mode. That level of badass just has to be respected

I once flung a migrant off a bridge. He collided with the brook cliff and died.
A year later, my legendary engraver engraved him colliding with an obstacle and dying.

Sounds like Fun. And like the main reason why you disarm your prisoners before using them for target practice or training dummies ;)

Mister must have had them on Inactive schedule. But individ training does help weapon skills

Should you fail to comply, strict !!disciplinary actions!! will be taken. Also, we feel we should remind you that one of the "criminals" on your list is the chief medical dwarf. If he ends up too badly injured to do his job, you will be fired. Out of a magma cannon.

From experience, I can say they start sparring at a minimum level of NOVICE in any military skill. No matter the weapon (crossbows included) they will spar after some moments of demonstration or teaching. Also, I think they must have a NOVICE skill in organizer (manager skill) to spar but unsure here.

Not needed.

At an insignificant rate, but yes this statement is true. You want to avoid indiv. weapon drills if you can help it - it's meant to be a cooldown period before the next organised training session (demonstration or sparring).

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

It's not enough to set them to train every month from the [m]ilitary menu. You also have to do it from the quad menu. If you don't do the squads menu thing they will keep their civilian professions, and occasionally do Individual Combat Drill rather then sparring.

To set them to spar from the squads screen just select the squad and hit [t]. They'll switch from inactive to active training, and lose their civilian professions.
