It looks like we're going to be in the Navy then, unless the next 2 or 3(or even more?) people want to go Army too... I'll set us up next turn or after it, if and once we have a few more people (see previous page). Remember that you may sign up even after I've assigned the pilots - you'll just be the "new maggot" arriving from the school.


The next carrier to be launched is the CV Hiyō in 17 days, but her sister Jun'yō(or just, Junyo) is at Singapore and hasnt seen any kind of action so far, other than sailing from Kure Yards to Singapore with her escorts. Junyo, is it?

Land based air units tend to see more action than the CV units... But pilots and leaders can always be transferred from a unit to another later, and the CV air units are not tied to their ships but may also operate from land bases, just like the other air units. I think the Junyo-1 is size 21 so it'd be the perfect air unit for role playing.

Junyo 1 is now on station at Singapore. She shares the harbor with many other capital ships, including the carriers CV Kaga, CVL Ryujo, CVE Unyo, battleships Yamato and Hiei, 6 light cruisers, floatplane scout cruisers Mizuho and Nisshin and a host of destroyers and a large number of other vessels from transports to ASW units. Here is the Hikotai(squadron) Junyo-1:



As you can see, the unit has 24 A6M2s in active use. 3 more are partially dissembled and stored in the center of the hangar deck, furthest from the 2 elevators, but on the first deck. The commander is CDR Yamada, M. He is not a pilot himself and as hes an OK leader he'll be the commander for now. The orders for Junyo-1 are to keep training the new guys for now. However, CDR Yamada has been ordered to be ready to receive new orders within a week.

Other units aboard the Junyo are the Junyo-2's 19+3 D3A1s and Junyo-3's 14+3 B6N2s. Typically the carrier units have 4 spare planes each, but the small size of the Junyo and her air units had to led the decision to keep the reserve plane numbers a bit lower, to leave space for a few more active planes. Junyo-2's mission is to of course attack any given land and sea targets, but to also fly naval search with the floatplanes from various escort cruisers and battleships. The Junyo-3's B6N2s will also fly naval search, although somewhat less, as they are spared to attack enemy ships using the 18 torpedoes carried aboard the Junyo. The unit is sized so that with 2 planes used for search, 11 B6N2s will fly in the first attack, leaving 7 torpedoes. With the to-be-expected casualties to enemy fighters and anti-aircraft fire, 7 torpedoes are probably enough for the follow on attacks, and the B6N may always carry 2 250kg bombs instead.

In Junyo-1, there are 26 pilots and 2 more arriving in 3 and 4 days. As you can see, majority of the pilots are actually pretty good. Many of them have their air skill in the mid 70s(training it that high takes nearly year or so usually, from fresh graduates, so that makes like 1½ to 2 full years of training), the defensive air skill and experiences are also very high. There are 7 fresh operational flight school graduates there too with lowish experience but at least their skills are good. Once the unit starts flying, those new guys should be able to learn their EXP up to the 50s fairly quickly.

The rank spread is pretty typical for a Navy fighter unit

3 Lieutenants - Kaigun Daii
1 Warrant Officer - Kaigun Jun-i
1 Chief Petty Officer - Jōtōheisō
11 Petty Officer 1st Class - Ittōheisō
10 Petty Officer 2nd Class - Nitōheisō

I actually just noticed that there are very few Ensigns and Lieutenant Junior Grades in the Navy Air Force. And many of them seem to have been promoted to their ranks from WO or CPO during the war... I guess it makes sense, as they've showed what they can do but havent had the time to go through the officer school yet and become Lieutenants.

As you can see, some of these pilots have flown some sorties. These have all been CAP over Singapore in an attempt to give the pilots some more experience(and hopefully make them build air or defn skills  a too), and not real combat sorties. If everyone agrees to Sheb being the highest ranking pilot and the XO, he should pick either of the LCDRs.

I think my rank about-matches what is Petty Officer 2nd Class in the IJN. So  I claim PO2 Nagashima, H(lets call him Hiro).

The commander is this time just the manager and coordinator. I like the non flying leaders more, as the flying ones tend to get killed and every time that happens I often have a good leader less and need to find someone to replace the dead guy...

I quite like the look of that ship, Erkki, but there's no denying it's very bland, inyerface and industrial.  :)

Gentlemen, welcome to the war room.

Situation is this:

Japan has Burma, NEI and everything it wants in the South Pacific.

Allied CVs are in Pearl or nearby.

KB is hiding and I dont think Bart would have sent his CVs to Pearl would he know the main body of the KB to be at Truk.

I am 99% sure the Allied know we are going to invade Australia. Their SIGINT is just that good, and we've been overflying northern Australia for months now. He knows there are massed naval forces and lots of troops in Soerebaja. He knows the Japanese Battleship fleet is there, as is majority of the heavy cruiser fleet. The Allied navies are also moving along the Eastern coast of Australia. We dont know what they're up to exactly, but I wouldnt wonder if Bart saw a weakness a tried to exploit it - maybe invading Tarawa, Tabiteuea, Ndeni, Solomons. Maybe a CV raid. We dont know. I believe(and probably you do, too), that Bart has moved his CVs to Pearl in preparation of a counterattack somewhere in the Pacific while, from his POV, the Japs are looking elsewhere(when we will be invading Australia).  but we WILL use this to our advantage. Right now! I've also given Bart enough time to prepare his navies to directly engage the invasion fleet. We are prepared.

The next 3 weeks are probably going to be interesting. Turn report for July 17 later today.

Duty. Obayashu often thought about duty. When he was a boy, his father had taught him about the different duties. His duty to his brother. His duty to his family, his duty to the village and Japan. Duty was not the same as responsibility. The latter could be part of the first, but never the same. In school he was taught more of the duty and often would he learn of what duty could be, in good and bad. His duty to take care of his parents and family, who had given him life, who were his life. His duty to study and learn to become a proper citizen so that his nation could grow stronger. And now the Navy, every action of a naval soldier was due to duty. And the greatest duty to a man was to serve his nation, his people, by facing its enemies on a battlefield. His initial 3 year service in the Navy had been physically exhausting, but he had at last found out the very core of the duty and had enlisted, starting a military career. Day by day he could sense how the time when the skills he had been taught would be needed was coming nearer. The day when he could, perhaps, finally fulfill his duty, and perhaps to achieve the greatest honor to a soldier. But before that, it would be his duty to serve the best he can. To work, and to follow orders without questions.

A sudden gust grabbed his cap and only his quick, exercised, reactions saved the cap from flying over board.

The whole squadron had been called to the flight deck, at the very bow end of it, formed in three lines. After the long and hot day, everyone welcomed the evening's cold breeze, now waving the uniforms of the men from the North. The dark blue sailor suits they knew every navy in the world wore. The day had been full of work as they had been training the recently arrived pilots, and landing on a stationary carrier in a nearly 90-degree sidewind of 20 knots had never been easy to anyone, in any plane. Many mock-up dogfights had been fought, and everyone in the squadron had flown at least once. But now most of the planes had been taken down into the hangars, where they would be prepared for tomorrow by the mechanics who might need to stay up the whole night. Only a pair of alert-ready A6Ms were left standing side by side by the edge of the deck behind the tower, and to the aft, standing on the elevator, a single D3A, which would be ready for any liaison tasks. For military service the past 3 weeks had been relatively easy, and Obayashi had noticed it - day by day the men were getting better as fighter pilots, but recently there had been some cases of visible lack of discipline. The men were getting to know each other too well. This would not do.

Standing before his men, Obayashi could see the massive shape of the Kaga approximately a kilometer away, and to the right and across the flight deck, the Yamato's tower was clearly visible. Two destroyers were anchored Junyo's both sides - they were there to guard the valuable carrier against any sabotage attempts. Almost 200 meters away, behind the D3A, he could see the other pilots forming up, and then suddenly running on the deck again, over the side and down back into their quarters just before the last sailor had quite reached the end of the line. That would probably be going for the next 15 minutes, and it would probably do good to the Junyo-1's Zero "Aces" as well. But not now. He wondered if his pilots werent the least lacking in discipline on the ship, or if his superior was easier on his men than he, perhaps, should be. Commander Yamada, who to Obayashi's great relief wants to do all the paper work, training and mission planning himself and leave Obayashi only the practical matters, had arrived from a meeting with Captain Ishii an hour ago and had given him instructions. Ishii himself had spent most of the day aboard the Yamato in a meeting that nobody was, apparently, supposed to know about. Captain Ishii probably knows what is going on, but Obayashi could see in the Commander's eyes that he did not. What the Commander did know is that the Junyo would be leaving Singapore in only 9 hours.

"Squadron! Attention!

Tomorrow's schedule is changed. At 0600 hours, first pair takes off for patrol over the ship. Second pair ready at 0600 hours, takeoff at 0900 hours. Third pair ready at 0900 hours, takeoff at 1200 hours. Fourth pair ready at 1200 hours, takeoff at 1500 hours. The alert pair on the wall in the quarters list is used. Make sure you have that full tank of fuel, drop tank attached, weapons and ammo ready. Standard check list, but also test radios with your pair and to the tower before take off, using both full and half power. Also hydraulics. Personally make sure that the ammunition is loaded and the weapons themselves are good before your plane is moved to the flight deck. Start and test the engine drop tank valve open. Bring the drop tanks back. From 0500 hours tomorrow, everyone is in the standard 15 minute readiness, assigned patrol pairs in full cockpit readiness. That makes 2 in the air and 2 in cockpit readiness from 0600 hours onwards. Also 2 pairs are in 5 minute alert from 0600 hours. 4 planes will be moved up before the dawn for them. Next 2 pairs replace the first 5-minute alert pairs at 1200 hours. Further orders issued at 1030 hours in the quarters.

I have the picket screen in place and some raiding forces running wild in his backyard. He doesnt seem to have anything that could intercept before the fleet is already unloading. And what can intercept later, those are what we have the IJN for.  ;)
