Navy Torpedo Bomber pilot for me, preferably one that's likely to get a shot at some of the larger enemy ships...

I would love to take one of the B1 subs (I18-30), which ever you use to target reinforcement shipping.

Do you have any DDs that will see a lot of combat? A crappy old one would be fun.

Could he make any sort of attack from India against your forces in China, or try some sort of end-run within the defensive parameter you're forming?

Okay, lets see. If at any time you want to know where your character is and hows he doing, feel free to ask. I'll add these in the end of the first post later...

Write me up as one of the newly trained pilots! I'll be posted where the Emperor needs me the most!

It'd be interesting to follow one pilot in the middle of this massive conflict :) If it's too much work, feel free to drop this at any time!

I have a gut feeling that we'll be seeing lots of air action in Burma any day now. Theres no way the Allies will let Magwe's oil fields just be where they are and pump the Japanese 3,000 tons of oil a day that then gets right away turned into 2,700 tons of fuel in the refineries at Magwe and Rangoon. Most of the front line squadrons are already filled with pilots, but there are some that could use reserve pilots.

WO Takanaka, P. His skills are: EXP 50, AIR 70, DEFN 69 (there are other skills but they are not used by fighter pilots unless kamikazing, strafing etc but I'm not intending to use my fighters in those roles just yet...). EXP is general "flying skill" - the higher it is the less likely he is to crash, the more likely he is to survive home (including when hes flying a damaged plane, in poor weather, long range etc.), AIR and DEF are 2 skills used in air combat. AIR is only used by fighters, where DEF is also used by bombers and strike aircraft for dodging AAA fire and fighters AFTER the bombing run (afaik). Hes fresh from reserve flight officer school (means 3 years of service in Japan....) and has 2 months of advanced training in an operational training unit.

Takanaka will arrive in 3 days to his unit, the 59th Sentai at Meiktila, flying Ki-43-Ic. 59th's nominal strength is 30 planes and pilots, but now has 30+4 planes and 38 pilots. This base is just East from Magwe, and the unit's mission is to fly LRCAP over Magwe as well as over its own base at Meiktila. Magwe itself has the 77th Sentai and some reconnaissance units.

I'll take a fighter pilot as well. Preferably Navy, so I can see the world!

I'm afraid all the CV units are full(or as full as they are plausible to keep) but the Navy has about 1/3 of its fighter units flying from land bases.

Chitose Ku S-1 was divided today into 3 size 12 squadrons - 2 of them will stay at Rabaul while the 3rd, S-1/C, transferred to Tulagi.

PO1 Abe, K. He'll arrive at Tulagi in 4 days. Skills are EXP 73(a pre-war career officer...), AIR 70, DEFN 75. Chitose Ku S-1/C has 12 A6M2 Zeros and 16 pilots. It is based at Tulagi, its current task is to fly CAP above Tulagi, Florida and Guadalcanal and offer protection to the in and outgoing troop transports bring supplies and troops to the islands. It is also ordered to co-operate with Rabaul's G4M1 unit, so that should the torpedo bombers sortie to a nearby target, the S-1/C will (try to) meet and escort the bombers. Just across the strait to the South on Guadalcanal island, the Army 47th Independent Fighter Chutai flying 15 x Ki-43-Ic is based at Lunga airbase with the same mission.

Navy Torpedo Bomber pilot for me, preferably one that's likely to get a shot at some of the larger enemy ships...

The above mentioned G4M1 unit at Rabaul, Kanoya Ku K-1 needs some pilots... The unit is stationed at Rabaul, its mission being flying naval search to max range and attacking any enemy surface units sighted(Tulagi and Port Moresby have more patrol & search units that can provide the Kanoya Ku K-1 with target info). Currently its secondary mission is bombing cut-off enemy troops at Lae.

PO2 Nishiura, P. Arrives at Rabaul in 4 days. Skills (of him an his aircrew) are EXP 55, NavB 58, NavT 62, NavS 66, ASW 34, GrdB 57, DEFN 55. Not so great in any one skill but at least he is versatile.

I would love to take one of the B1 subs (I18-30), which ever you use to target reinforcement shipping.

I-27 was completed a week ago and is now being transferred from Port Arthur to Palembang, currently off the coast of Luzon(Philippines). It is commanded by a above mediocre but poorly motivated Commander Yoshimura, Iwao. On their first cruise, I-27's crew is also far from crack, but not bad (EXP 55/53). I-27 also carries an E14Y fold-wing search floatplane with her. Once I-27 is refueled and refit at Palembang(a second floatplane pilot will be taken aboard as well as a second floatplane, unassembled, in the boat's external storages) it will most likely be ordered to patrol somewhere W or NW of Perth, Australia to monitor and attack any Allied traffic in the area.

Oh, yes, please put me as a Naval aviator, not Army! I want to escort Burnt Pies!

Also, Burnt Pies, check PM ;)

You get what you ask... This will probably show you how small the Japanese, especially Navy's reserves are:

PO1 Minobe, J. Skills are EXP 53, AIR 55, DEFN 56. Not a good fighter pilot at all, but his EXP is so high that I had to kick him out the operational training school some time ago because he was taking a slot from a low-exp pilot who would have (and did) learn the actual skills like 5 times quicker.

Same group as Timferius, but different squadron: Chitose Ku S-1/B at Rabaul(where the G4M1 unit Kanoya Ku K-1 is), operating A6M2. He will arrive at the unit in 4 days. Unit flies CAP above Rabaul, and as secondary role is tasked to escort the G4M1 bombers unless they fly outside of Zero's range; this unit is currently not using drop tanks. This is a very important unit as Rabaul's harbor has the Tanaka Squadron (4 heavy cruisers and 8 destroyers), Battleship Mutsu and her escorts as well as 4 light cruisers and over 40 other ships. The Chitose Ku S-1/B has perhaps the 2nd known Japanese pilot of all time, legendary PO1 Nishizawa, Hiroyoshi. His current skills are EXP 85, AIR, 74 and DEFN 84. The whole Chitose Ku S-1 group is yet to see any action to none of the pilots in the 3 sub squadrons have any kills.

I think I can take one more request. I'll see the others later today, now to take the turn.  ;) Screenshots coming later.

March 12th

We now have a 1700 AV force at Bandoeng, deliberate attack ordered for tomorrow. 420(53rd Division)+40+250AV joining in 2 to 4 days. Makassar invasion force boarding ships... I will use 4 carriers, 2 cruiser squadrons, a DD squadron led by a CL and BB Ise as bombardment force. Most of the DEI area submarines will be moved between Makassar and Timor to protect the right flank.

Quiet elsewhere. In other news, the Allies admit to have lost CL Mauritius and DD John D. Edwards - good news! I was 99% sure about Mauritius but didnt know the John D. Edwards went down too. A Zero pilot MIA over Bandoeng is found, so our Java campaign fighter pilot casualties are back to 0.   :P

Solomons area is starting to look like something:

Destroyer captain requesting assignment  :)

DD Makigumo. Makigumo a brand new Yugumo-class destroyer that finished its operational trials just 11 days ago. It was immediately given the task to escort 3 xAKs transferring the 14th Naval Construction Battalion to Tulagi area. The task small task force left Kobe 7 days ago and is now approaching the Marianas. Makigumo will reach New Britain in about 7 days, after which it will join the fleet at Rabaul while the transports will continue to Tassafaronga(on Guadalcanal) unescorted.

Makigumo(Yugumo 12/42 class, exp 66/69(very good!)) is commanded by Commander Fujita, Isamu (leadership 62, inspiration 66, naval 70, admin 47, aggression 71 - this bloke is a pretty good one, I might actually later give him a bigger ship to command, maybe one of the light cruisers... All the bigger ones + most destroyers already have as good or even better commanders).

March 13th

East Indies:

Good news! The enemy force at Bandoeng is just 950 AV behind forts 3. They are cut off and seemingly cant fix even 15 airfield hits a day. Our 2000 AV today got 1:2 odds (deliberate attack) so once we have 420 more and actually use all the units (3 regiments didnt take part to the attack as they just entered the hex) we should be able to get the place in less than 2 weeks. Or quicker, as the Dutchmen's supply is cut off.

Makassar invasion is a go! The fleet composition has changed a little. We are using a 20-ship CVTF with 3 CVs and a CVL, 4 cruiser TFs (one joins from Java), Battleship Ise and her escorts, a separate 4-destroyer escort squadron for the transports and CL Kashii and 8 DDs close cover with the transports. 16h infantry regiment, 21st JAAF AF Bn and an air HQ are aboard the ships. To support this invasion, Kalidjati's fighters are ordered to sweep Soerebaja tomorrow - Japanese bombers visited the place 2 days ago and there were(typically and as expected) no fighters protecting the city. Lets see if there are now...

Still silent everywhere else. I'm moving more troops and a construction battalion to Marcus island. KB Replenishment force heads to Rabaul where it'll unload all the fuel and then head to load more at Tarakan, Borneo.

Tomorrow: 2nd Raiding Regiment jumps to Akyab in Burma, 2 aviation support battalion follow the day after as fighters are flown in. I'm not going to defend Akyab seriously, taking it to see how much land the Allies are ready to lose before they start fighting back...

OK looks like Anvilfolk has 2 pilots. My bad, lol. Well, we can still follow them both.  ;)

Do you have any DDs that will see a lot of combat? A crappy old one would be fun.

Those crappy old ones dont see much action because thanks to short range they are unsable as escorts and small size and light armament makes them bad surface combatants. You'll get... DD Yugumo, flag ship of the Yugumo class(stats same as Makigumo's). Yugumo is now part of TF 5, the most forward-deployed surface task force we have, providing distant cover for Makassar invasion fleet in the Java Sea by sailing ahead of the main fleet. The force is led by CL Sendai, escorted by DDs Yugumo, Akigumo, Natsushio, Ayanami, Asagiri, Yugiri and TB Hato.

Zero me, please. :)

Could he make any sort of attack from India against your forces in China, or try some sort of end-run within the defensive parameter you're forming?

The Burma Road is in Japanese control as are all the roads and from India across the mountains to the western China... But I'm expecting the first Allied land offensive here. Probably at earliest in June or July.

You'll have to wait for your Zero pilot, but at the latest you'll get one to follow in 12 (in-game) days when the 1st and 6th Ku S-1 units arrive. They'll need 27+45 planes and pilots. I dont have that many trained fighter pilots in the reserve so I'll probably make the other unit an operational training unit while the other is filled with freshly trained pilots and sent to the front: Burma or Solomons/New Guinea.

March 14th

Burma: Akyab captured by 2nd Raiding Regiment paratroopers. No enemy garrison was present so not a single shot was fired. Tomorrow we'll fly in an aviation support company and fighters will sweep to see if the enemy flies CAP against our transports.

Java: A very odd move by Smeulders - Allies moved some fighters to the cut-off Bandoeng. 4 Hurricanes and 5 B-339s were engaged by today's bomber escorts - we shot down 2 B-339s but lost a bomber, plus a bomber and 2 Ki-43s were written off due damage. If damaged, those Allied fighters cannot be railed away because the place is surrounded, and the base is so damaged that they might not be able to fly tomorrow even if the planes are fixed. Makassar invasion fleet advances on schedule. CVEs Taiyo and Hosho broke through to the Indian Ocean and are most probably undetected. They will sweep South to Java and Waingapoe to catch any Allied TFs that flee the Japanese carriers in the Java Sea. Submarine screen starts to move to its new position...

Pacific: All quiet. 42nd Naval Garrison Unit arrived today at Tokyo - it'll be moved to Paramushiro Jima in the Kuriles.

Can you write me in as the captain of the Kaga?

I'll see about that tomorrow.  ;)

March 15th

Java Sea:

The Flying Dutchmen retreat to Soerebaja but forget to set a CAP - Japanese carriers launch some D3A strikes to Soerebaja and finally destroy the last 6 of the Dutch PT boats. Bandjermasin invaded, but it looks like the defenders are 2/3 as strong as the attacking SNLF Marine unit so we'll send some reinforcements from Palembang. I had intended to use those units to take some of the unoccupied bases but we'll have time to come back later.

Makassar invasion minus 2 days. Samarinda invasion force arrives at Tarakan in 2 days - Samarinda invasion will be delayed from schedule by about 3 days, but it shouldn't matter as the flanks are well protected.

Indian Ocean: CVE raiders advance. They havent seen anything for 2 days now, and I hope they are still undetected. If the Allies didnt see our carriers yesterday they sure did today, and some ships might flee South. This TF has fuel to sail all the way to Timor and back to Sumatra.

SOPAC: Dozens of task forces sailing back and forth, moving supplies and units. 25th Air Flotilla HQ boards ships at Yokohama today. Destination for them is Lunga or Shortlands. I have Southeast Area Fleet HQ at Tulagi but I'm not sure if it can provide the HQ bonus and torpedoes to nearby bases. I forgot to move a H6K unit to Lunga to test it, but I'll know about that in 2 days. I'm intending to make every and each base in the Solomons Chain a able nest torpedo-armed single or two engined strike aircraft or flying boats. If it works as I hope it to I can move the Fleet HQ to Thousand Ships Bay and placing other HQs at Shortlands and Rabaul cover all but 3 bases with the HQ command radiuses: Green Island, Feni Islands, and northern end of Luganville, Buka.

US West Coast: An E14Y float search plane from submarine I-27 sights a 7-ship tanker-only task force near San Francisco. Lets see if we catch any of them tomorrow or the day after.
