Bins go unused
« on: September 30, 2011, 03:49:40 am »

Hey all, been a while since I posted as I haven't been playing for a while, waiting for the next version that seems to never finish and all.

And since I haven't played a while I think I've made a really stupid mistake in this fortress I'm working on, but I can't seem to find out what it is.
So I'm sure one of you could give me some insight on the matter. The problem is my stockpiles not accepting bins.
More precise there are many stockpiles accepting bins with the max bin setting maxed out, yet dwarves are not hauling the bins to the target stockpiles.
They are however moving them to the furniture stockpile where they belong

So far I've tried removing all existing stockpile and placing one new bin accepting one, however to no avail. I've also tried moving the stockpiles underground as all of the ones I have now are above ground, but no luck.

At first I thought it was a bug however after genning a new world and trying out bins and stockpiles real quick I encountered no problems, so all I can think of is I made a really stupid mistake in this current fort and I simply cannot see where it went wrong.

If you could throw some thoughts what could cause this I'd much apreciate.
On request I can upload the save. I should warn you though it's not my most elegant and efecient fortress hehe.
In the meanwhile I suppose I'll have to do without bins.

P.S. I forgot to mention barrels and pots are working fine.

Check the "reserved bins" setting on the stock[p]ile menu. This setting should be set to 0 by default. What this setting does is set aside a number of bins (it can also reserve barrels) so that they are only filled by workshop tasks and dwarves won't fill them with stockpiles naturally. For the number of bins or barrels that a stockpile itself allows you would want to look at a stockpile with the "q" menu and change the settings there.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Huh here I thought it was something I'd know about yet I've never ever actually paid any attention to those settings, I have no idea when and why I changed that number. Learn something new every day I guess.

I feel kind of stupid now leaving this topic so empty, so I guess I'll add another question.

What kind of jobs need bins reserved? Obviously reserved barrels have plenty of use but I can think of none for bins.

Oh man I just realized the trouble I could have saved with a few reserved barrels in all those fortresses before this, I feel really stupid now.  :-\

I don't think that there is anything in vanilla DF that reserving bins would help with.
And as for feeling stupid, don't be too hard on yourself. I've been playing DF for almost 3.5 years now and I still managed to have a stupid moment like that one just 2 days back. The way I think of it is that simply by learning how to play DF you prove yourself smart enough to outweigh all of the stupid moments for the rest of your gaming lifetime.
