So if you assigned your military to use only steel picks (no "use nearest match") and embark with copper picks, will they carry the steel ones the same as planned?

hmm?

the only factor that ive found to affect if this works or not is if youve embarked with the picks.
Think that has something to do with the picks not showing up in the weapons subscreen in the stockpile window.

But essentialy: You make/import a pick. Assign specific weapon -choosing that pick- and enable minning job.
The dwarf will now use that pick, what ever it is, and not change out of armour or swap picks when minning or when fighting.
-Off duty for minning and on duty for fighting respectivly-

Also: when assigning two picks through this method, the dwarf will DUAL WEILD PICKAXES. Can also be used to dual weild any other weapon. This also works in combination of dual weilding sheilds for some odd reason, so you can have a dwarf that has a pick axe in each hand and a sheild strapped to each arm, though it is still held in the hand.
I'd very much like to see a fan-artists rendition of a squad of a dual-pick-wielding, dual-shielded dwarves tearing into a Goblin siege.

Sorry to necro my own post.

Discovery:
Picks brought on Embark do not show up in stockpile menu untill the dwarves are made to put them down, usualy via being drafted into the millatery.
Picks brought on embark, when used to kill enought critters to be claimed, then made unforbidden again and assigned as a uniform weapon, will be then used for both fighting and minning without any problems. Its just the initial set up of the affair thats the problem.

So to recap: Embark with picks. draft miners, assign them their picks of weaponry choice, make them kill things untill picks are forbidden, unmillatery them. unforbid picks, reassign those specific picks in weapons menu if required. remillatery them to make them change into their uniform, then unmillatery and they should keep hold of their picks for minning and fighting and be on the way to giving said picks names, turning them into pesudo artifacts that make said picks about 3 times more likely to hit and parry i belive.

So their, thats how to make your dwarfs avoid the miner uniform bug. ENJOY!

I gave a miner two pickaxes and set the uniform to replace clothing. He grabs both copper picks when I tell his squad to move somewhere, but when I remove the move order he stores them both and grabs a steel pick instead.

I must be doing something wrong.

Then it happened. Then I cringed. Then I picked it up and beat him to death with it, and then his buddies, too.
You beat a man to death with his dick?

Could be a problem associated with claimming a pick weapon, since as soon as a dwarf has done that i tend not to have any problems, have you got one dwarf to take a single pick first, go kill alot of things untill its forbidden, then unforbidden it through stockpiles menu?

May have missed out that factor before, or some factor i havent thought of yet.

could try disabling minning, assigning a move order, then re-enable minning when in millatery before telling them to stop station order.

Course this could also be a problem related to shceduals, with the dwarves only keeping their armour and weapon when their squads are classed as active. Try assigning the uniform, setting a barracks and setting the active trainning number to 0 or 2 -with 3 miners in it- and see if that resolves the problem.

AHA!
i found out what was up, after a bit of mucking about with my dwarves.

You need at least 1 active trainer at all times for the miners to use their picks both for minning and fighting, speficily assigned picks, uniform wile offduty and more than 1 miner in each millatery group -ovbiously- I havent tested if a barracks is required or not, but i know if you have a single bed and set it as a trainning barracks then it will work as prescribed.
this fixes the problem with changeing uniforms entierly. :)

Also: pressing tab wile in stocks menu lets you list all items of that type, so even single picks can be sorted through. just forbid those you dont want used by millatery -ie ones wihtout kills-, assign picks, then mass unforbid all picks. Job done.
