Help with an emergency obsidian 'Gate'
« on: September 29, 2011, 01:17:24 am »

From what I understand, clowns can cut-through gates, doors, floodgates, etc.; ignore traps, and basically all standard defences. In short, everything except for actual constructions or 'natural' casted obsidian walls. I have a bad habit of accidentally breaching into the circus, and was wondering if anyone could help me with a construction that could, on a single lever pull, rapidly block off a hallway (preferably 3-tiles wide or more) with obsidian. Or an equivalent method of blocking the entrance. My fort already has large quantities of magma and water in reservoirs available.

Any ideas?

1: Building destroyers will smash anything that they can path right next to.  If you place a hatch over a 1x1 stairway, then anything coming up can't path beside the hatch and will sit under it harmlessly.  IE - Building destroyers cannot reach upwards.

2: Build a 3 wide hallway.  At one point, place floodgates along the side closer to your fort (or both, if you want).  Dig out a 1 tile wide trench from one wall to the other, such that it's right beside the floodgates.  Place hatches over the trench.  Run pressurized water through the trench.  Run magma through the ceiling at the same point, using hatches.  Open both hatches - pressurized water rushes up while magma rushes down, creating obsidian.  For best results, only pressurize on the desired level.  Pressure differences can cause the obsidian to generate in the ceiling and flood the hallway with water, if the magma doesn't fall quickly enough.  The floodgates are there to prevent excess fluids from escaping the wall zone, but if you want you can let it be messy.

Clowns can't destroy a locked floor hatch from below  -- they have to be on the same z as a building to destroy it..  Put a hatch cover every level of your central stair and you'll be able to lock them off, hell it works if you only put one or two ready to lock away your addy dig site, as long as they can't escape into the magma sea.

I use rising bridges to stop their movement. If you intend to use upright spear traps behind the bridge, make sure to wall it off. I once had a fire clown explode and destroy my bridge. There was a lot of FUN afterwards.  :-\

I did something similar in one of my forts. My 'Vault' that my dorfs used in an emergency was sealed with a natural stone block falling through the ceiling and blocking off all access. I never used it as the only 'emergencies' were FB infections.

I usually build a 3x3 plug hanging from a support which would fall into a 3x3 square right at the entrance of the candy mine. In the case of clowns breaching in I activate the lever to block all access to the mine. Luckly I would crush some clowns beneath it.

Thanks, everyone! Girlinhat's design sounds fantastic, I'm going to go with that, and use floor hatches as a backup just in case.
The idea of a plug with supports actually sounds too effective to me, I want to keep an element of risk.

Again, thanks!

My plan is the most difficult proposed, but also the most theatrical and complex.  This makes it preferred by default.

Or you could place a 3x2 bridge that raises in the direction of the hallway, which would completely block all traffic, including building destroyers

But girlinhat's idea is more complex, so do that

Bonus points if you have the liquids starting at hundreds of tiles away, then meeting in open air, causing a cave-in, which would deposit the wall on your front door.

As long as you made sure to make the bridge out of an incredibly heat resistant material. Elsewise if one of the fire demons wanders to close to it the bridge will melt and disassemble, providing a way for creatures to make it in to your fort.

also try not to wall off or build a floor over the HFS hole as this will kill your FPS as it seems that the Building Destroyer 2 creatures will spam the pathfinding algorithm even if there is not a path.
