Greatswords? What do you think the serrated discs are for?

Incendiary rounds, YES!: A barrel of booze stripped (or is it strapped?) to a ballista bolt. Add "Repeating" to ballista, a contact fuze and a revolving magazine. Imagine the sound of it. New profession: Fire Brigade.
The burning barrel cascade! Explosive like in Half-Life2. Crude, chaotic but funny.
Basically the thing is: Prometheus was right. Fire is progress!

That would be too dangerous for your own fortress though. There'd be dozens of dwarves chasing after the barrels to save the booze.

That's not to say that explosives and fiery things wouldn't be hilarious though.

Related to be what USED TO BE the topic, you should always keep some weapon specialists of other types in your military. For example, in my current fort I have 20 soldiers, 10 have swords, 2 axes, 4 spears, and 4 hammers. With that loadout, I can basically deal with any threat that comes my way.

On topic- I use mostly hammer and axes in a mix, and they work together to tenderize and dice foes.

And yeah, generally a mix is the best form of defense. I've tried using maces, and they've only really been a jack of all trades, and a master of none. So it's more like a generalist vs specialist thing, and specialists working together win.

Pff, my super-long bow can fire katana that proceed to not only pierce a fully armored knight, but also cut him in two at the boniest part of the body while pinning him against a wall of solid steel 20 feet away.

Brilliant! This is an entirely new weapons system, katana and longbow united for mind-shattering ridiculosity! I propose a new name for this katana/bow device... kablow!
