So what's basically the point of weapons other than spears? I experienced them to be very fine weapons after I had the same issue as the OP: A bronze titan worked on with hammers. I called them the smithy squad afterwards for they kept on denting the beast. However spears penetrate and can do serious internal damage.

I also found axes to be worthy and quite hilarious. But hammers? They are dwarf-like and that's it.
None of my fortressess ever touched the swords. Next time those elves come around tryin to sell me those woodswords, I'll have them down my dumpster. And maces seemed to work like hammers.
Thought once about halberds, anyone tried out? In adventure mode they are quite great.

Well, spears kill a bit more slowly on many targets such as goblins, critters and whatnot. Those are best left to blunts/blades. In fact, most of the enemies you encounter will be in that group, so having a main of blunts/blades is better than a main of spears. However, it's the harder and more infrequent enemies which spears excel at. Also, swords are awesome. Better than axes at killing the harder enemies, better than spears at killing the numerous (though not as good as vice versa).

Halberds suck, IMO. Tried an adventurer with it; they aren't effective at penetrating armour or slicing flesh. They are basically a cross-between of spears and swords which ends up sucking at both.

I usually have my close-combat infantry 2/3 spears and 1/3 mixed depending on conscripts' initial skills, but favoring axes and swords over blunt weapons.

The logic being that the dwarves are well enough trained and equipped to deal with the Goblins and Humans no matter what weapon they use, but when the real shit hits the fan I want at least majority of my army to have weapons that can deal with it. Also good against invader's mounts, especially those that dont like fighting but run away instead... Goblins will sooner or later run out of mounts after their leader sieges you, but humans wont. My 3 last Human sieges had nothing but camel and horse-mounted bow and crossbowmen, so as you can imagine, hammers really arent an option for the main weapon.

I see that a couple of you come up and suggest to mix weapons in a squad - I might give that a try. I go only with stuff I would call dwarfy and that's blunt, spear and AXE.

Mitchewawa does not like halberds - they might suck more than the real stuff. I HAD more fun with the steel axe in adventure - yes, but halberds are just so classy milita / watch weapons.

Again, swords are not to be touched under my sway. Anyone come up with that hanky panky stuff and I'll demonstrate the shoving up ones ... Have you ever seen Urist DeBergerac make some la-di-dah move to come for the kill? With a rapier and moustache?
No, it's all about beard filled with yesterday's lunch and bits of goblin parts, a crazed charge resulting in a frothed beard and a healthy movement of bowels afterwards.

I'm using swords in my current fort.  A fort which, by the way, is fed on strawberry wine and goblin prepared spleen.  They do a fine job of hacking through my modded in sieges, which are similar to FD but generally all 5 new civs are comparable to goblins.  For megabeasts, well my soldiers are all legendary, that doesn't bother me, but for a bronze colossus I may break out some axes, and for HFS it'll be primarily spears.

I'm pretty sure dwarven swords are nothing like rapiers.  I'm imagining something more like this.  Besides, rapiers are fancy dueling weapons anyway, not something you'd bring to a battlefield.

Yeah, rapiers were pretty crap weapons in actual combat. Dwarven swords are short swords imagine a xiphos or gladius... Longer and wider than a dagger, yet short enough to be strong yet fast and not clumsy in cramped places and in the packed formations, but not a long medieval sword with more reach and armor penetrating trusting qualities either.

I imagine them exactly like this:

The lack of proper hilt and sleek design, specifically.

I was exaggerating. As a remedy I'll offer to accept large daggers, which - considering the average height of a dwarf - might be called a (short) sword. That Girlinhat's picture shows a nice one. Good for sticking in goblins and jammed mechanisms, I take?

I always end up viewing large daggers very much like this:

(Stolen from Mabinogi wiki, without permission =D)
Except I always imagine them wider, to the point that the blade base covers the entire hilt.

A mixture of axe/hammer works very well for me... I'd recommend trying a bit of variation next time?

Yes, apparently so.   :P

Psh, just drop the mountain on it and you'll be fine.
Yes, but cave-ins and obsidian solve *everything* if properly applied.

The problem there is engineering, not killing.
And finding enough mountain to do so.

As it turns out, the pen was in fact a poor choice for melee combat in comparison to the sword.

Haha, image caching prevented me from seeing the image.  What's funny is that Fhergus sucks anyways and breaks EVERYTHING he touches.  (Don't ask him about his ex wife, it's a touchy subject).

So, I'm on my second fort and trying everything. How are pikes? I've had a few gobbos drop them and I'm starting a squad...

Also have a scourge squad training up. Too bad I'm having trouble getting them to spar.
