I think he means learn a trade. Like a marketable skill. The army pays for that kind of stuff, I believe.

Well, in that vein, I am rather skilled with computers, and scored very high on my ASVAB back in my Junior year of High School.

I was on the way to joining the armed forces, when my fiancee at the time talked me out of it.

IIRC you can get the military to train you in a skilled trade like electrician of millwright while you are in, so when you leave you can get a better job than if you had nothing else to show for it.
