Retcyl looked at William with utter revulsion. Course being hatcuri, it was harder for William to detect.

"You want to help Laythe?! You want help the person who exiled you, tried to kill you, made a pointless war, and overall, was a horrible ruler?"

Retcyl caught his breath.

"She'd probably have you killed for helping her! And on the assumption she doesn't, what possible chance do you have of retaking Ligoria? Its a wreck now, but its still far too much for you and Laythe...Oh and I do agree with you on leaving a garrison."

"It was just a suggestion. Nike and Kathos are possibly strong, capable rulers, they seemed the sort when I met them, Rectyl. And strong, capable rulers make it hard for people like us to slip around and become powerful. And what if Laythe wins? Do you think she'll let us live and carry out our plots if she won and we helped her enemy?"
William glanced at the Lizard with a blank look.
"All I’m saying, Rectyl, is that maybe it would be good not to stick to any one side, in the coming conflict."

William let his feet fall off the desk and leaned foward on his knuckles.
"And since when do you give a damn about the suffering of any human? Huh?"

Its not the race I care about, its the people!

"Give a damn? William, one of the primary reasons for this expedition was to remove this suffering. Yes we came to establish trade, yes we came to find ideas, yes we came to convert, but we also came because we pitied you. Look at the streets; the poor shamble about, not different from their counterparts in the empire. No, what is disgusting about these human lands is that the governments do nothing to change their condition. At least in the empire the poor had departments that actually cared for them, whole priesthoods and acolytes who aided them. Here? I see so little."

After a few moments of silence, Retcyl laughed. "Didn't expect that, did you? Anyway, your probably right about Ligoria. I intend to return anyway, need to speak to Hugo and reassert some influence. I guess I'll be leaving you here William...Oh and yes, the Lord is an utter coward, which you probably know. He expected me to replace him with another. Would you mind replacing him?"

William's frown turned up at the corners.
"Very good. At least we have that view of these nations in common...Even in Lonemine, that Foundry Of Hell, they take care of the poor and enfeebled."

"I'll be coming with you. I doubt that the new rulers will let Laythe's banishment of me stand. If I can, when are you leaving? And as for the Lord, I'm suspecting he will be arrested and taken to court by winter, if all goes well."

He gestured to a teetering pile of paperwork, of which the bloodstained pad of paper that he was previously reading is included in.

"Soon. This week, in fact. The whole reason I've stayed this long was to find you."

As William gestured to the pile, Retcyl asked:

"Wait, who shall replace the lord then? Shall I call for a governor from Hatcur? Or have you planned something already?"

"I will, of course."

"So you can't put it off for...a week. I need to destroy some smuggling boats and hideouts soon."

"...I can delay for a week. I must be looking for some ships anyway." Retcyl gets up and walks exits the room. As he closes the door he says, "Be careful now, William".

Once he was back on the street, the ambassador returned to the docks and entered one little tavern. The Smooth Maid. Nothing smooth about it at all, just another tavern filled with sailors and beer. It wasn't even clean! Retcyl always wondered why these establishments always had such misleading names. Ah well, best to start looking for some ships.

Retcyl enters a tavern and tries to find out if there are any crews and ships willing to work for him.

Behind William's Barracks.
"I didn't know you considered me a friend, or else I would have brought something to drink. And yes, this is a safe place to discuss the matters we are going to discuss. Have your men ever fought gangs before?"

"Raiders, gangs. They're all quite the same, aren't they?" Terryn shrugged, "A few of my men no doubt have never had to fight while hiding from the Guards, Sir David did a fair job of keeping us on the right side of the law. But I assure you, the majority of my men are no strangers to dockside brawls. Is this a fair enough answer?"

He paused, waving a hand, "In any case, regarding the Guards...That fool, the Guard Captain? He very much believes I intend to work alongside him to kill you. He has ordered to Guards to follow me, to an extent, and he has told me about a band of mercenaries whom he uses as raiders to deal with outgoing smuggler caravans. In regards to them, I suggest we wait until they're out of town on a job- maybe just pay attention to the smugglers? Taking care of the guard should be fairly easy now, in any case."

((all right, skipping ahead to the council meeting without SC :P))

Tala and Pasha entered the council chambers later that evening, having arrived from their little vacation that afternoon-a runner had traveled all the way to the cave to inform them they were being summoned.

They took their usual seats, Pasha pulling up a chair for her, as usual.

Tala was the first to speak. She directed her words to Nikephoros, pointedly not addressing Kathos.

"Marshall Nikephoros, you summoned us, correct?

I'm sure it was important to Ligoria, to have interrupted me and my fiances time alone...how can we be of service?

Is this about the attempted murder of the Noblewomen, perhaps? Or is Ligoria finally doing some expanding?"

Tala tapped the hardwood table with her fine white nails, smiling politely.

William made a note on the pad.
"I need Information...Do you know which ships are smuggler ships? And who the best fighters in that gang are? My informant failed to give that info before he ended up in the bay."

[146] The captain makes a few notes about smuggler ships - marking them in order of 'ease'. There's about half a dozen in port at the moment, at least two of which contain crews that make some small nations weep.

Retcyl enters a tavern and tries to find out if there are any crews and ships willing to work for him.

[254] Depends on the work you want from them... ((will follow up after some explanation is made))

Nikephoros noted a minor tone of irritation in Tala's appearance and behaviour. He did not react, and neither adressed her directly, but briefly glanced at her before he spoke.

Dear councillors, The purpose of this meeting is to quickly review recent reforms instated and to approve a mission to conquer and incorporate the boroughs that lie at the borderland of Ligoria.
This is obiviously an important but really unambitious operation. By all accounts there are no counterarguments, so I will leave the table open for discussion of either the policing of the city or anything you deem worthy of discussing. In line with council "duty" to advise me and Kathos.

Tala nodded in attention.

"I was wondering when we were going to get around to that. I have no objections.

I will ask if I can attempt some diplomacy before we march-we will make no concessions, nor delay our actions, but I might be able to convince some of them to give up without a fight. Especially if they think then may gain land to govern from one of their opponents if they do not fight. I know a few of them personally-they may listen to me.

Do I have the approval to do this? Aside from the personal risk to myself, I can see no great disadvantage to trying. If timed correctly, it can be done so as to not alert them to our invasion any sooner than they would know beforehand.

I believe any lives saved are for the better."

Well, if you believe that talking will get us somewhere...

I believe we tried talking once with these guys under Laythe and when we seiged a certain city. But then again, we had certain constraints, whereas now we can conduct our policies more freely.
If you feel that you can achieve something, then I will be willing to let you try. I will be standing by in case something happens.

Any objections, anyone?

Behind William's Barracks:
"Raiders, gangs. They're all quite the same, aren't they?" "A few of my men no doubt have never had to fight while hiding from the Guards, Sir David did a fair job of keeping us on the right side of the law. But I assure you, the majority of my men are no strangers to dockside brawls. Is this a fair enough answer?"

In regards to them, I suggest we wait until they're out of town on a job- maybe just pay attention to the smugglers? Taking care of the guard should be fairly easy now, in any case."
" There's been a change of plans. I'm hoping to keep that idiot alive for a bit longer then I originally thought…I‘ll still let you kill him after he outlived his usefulness...The Law carries a lot of weight with the people who abide by it. The smugglers are the ones that need to go down first. They are too powerful at the current time."

"What of you then? Know how to fight good?"

In the Gaurdhouse:
William looked over the list with raised eyebrows. He would of whistled under his breath if he felt theatrical.
By Samhain, how did they get this many...
"Are you sure all these are...smugglers? Because these will have to be...scuttled...Or atleast the larger ones will..."

In William‘s Bedroom:
Chironas was on William’s bed, reading a book and looking bored. John and Jan were sitting in front of the door with loaded crossbows and Thom was leaning up against one of the balcony posts with a cigarette in one hand and drawn sword in the other, he tapped the blade against his leg every now and then, obviously bored.
William stepped into the room and all three of the bored looking guards snapped to attention. William knew Chironas was angry at him for ‘Locking her away in a tower’, because she pointedly ignored him until he spoke to her or kissed her. He hoped this would perk her up…or at least relieve her boredom.
"Hey, Love, want to come with me, while I carry out some ‘business‘?"

The Captain clarifies for you, "You weren't specific...At least three are simply trade vessels that run contraband from time to time. The largest ship in port right now, however, is the Dread Sovreign. Captain Rodanov runs a tight crew given he's former military. Thankfully they rarely pillage more than they need to keep running in repairsm food and whores for a year. He'd be a good man if he wasn't so against taking orders these days"

Retcyl enters a tavern and tries to find out if there are any crews and ships willing to work for him.

[254] Depends on the work you want from them... ((will follow up after some explanation is made))
***Continued***
A pair of mercenary vessels are in port for the remainder of the season, as well as a former trade escort that hasn't been hired since the loss of their last cargo run - coincidentally to one of the Smuggler ships in port. Neither crew is happy with eachother, but neither lost any men in the incident apparently, so aside from not having a job - the escort's crew is mostly just bored.
