"Very well, if you so desire, I'll explain. You must be aware that our Queen, though intelligent and strong, is not what I would call a good listener. That is why, taking into account the recent events, and seeing the imminence of an armed conflict, General Nikephoros came to me in order to find a solution that would let us preserve Ligoria and the Throne from any unwanted consequences of the... Fierce character of her majesty. The outcome of our meeting was simple: sometimes, you have to protect those you cherish from themselves, even if it means doing so from the shadows behind the throne. Our goal is to establish a council of loyal and able men who will try to influence her into making the best possible decision for Ligoria whenever necessary. In order to succeed, we need access to the administration - that is my role -, the military forces - Mr. Vandire here is in the best possible position for that - and the ear of the Queen herself, which we all have to a certain degree, but no one would have a better chance than one of the most praised Nobles of this Kingdom. That is when you come to play your part, Baron. Will you help us set this nation on the path to glory?"

For a long time, Kathos said nothing. He was obviously thinking about the offer. Avitus looked like a man of words, and not a man of actions. Nikephoros, however, had not fooled the Baron with his 'I am but a mere soldier', and he knew that this man was not to be underestimated.

"Alright. I'll join you. Do you have any plans for the future?"

Hm...interesting. A bit weak, but still.
William busied himself with a few reports, during which he frequently looked at the calendar. The he stopped and stared.
"Oh hell."
...Ten more years before your laid up in bed and screaming for death, where has the time gone...?
It was his birthday next week.

William organizes a tournament celebrating his birthday. Inviting all the Hatcuri soldiers, his own soldiers, and his allies to come and test -nonlethally, all swords must be wood- their cleverness and fighting skills, to take place on the Island. Armor and a Sword are to be used only, if a participant does not have them, they will be provided. The reward for winning the tournament- and for getting to second place if Will wins- is a Large Blood Red Ruby in the shape of a rose, set in gold.((I don't think this will need a roll.))

They had arrived at the island with little trouble and few hardships. Only thing that was a bit troubling were those gulls which constantly flew above the camp, laying waste to it with their cries and their droppings. Horrible creatures, but useful. Retcyl had a plan. With time, these creatures could be domesticated into a proper food source and even a basic defence. Course Retcyl didn't have the time or resources for that. Too busy planning the stronghold. Meanwhile, William was hosting a tournament for his birthday...Karafs had gone and joined up. Ah...Retcyl was never much of a fighter, hell in the whole history of his clan, there had only been 28 soldiers.

While quite a few men had gone to the tournament, many yet had stayed. Much to be done...A proper dock and barracks had to be made.

Karafs enters the tournament. Retcyl orders a dock and barracks to be built using his men.

Take full advantage of theyh enemies weaknesses using afore mentioned tactics

Tactics: Conserve Forces [4] - Success
Combat: Round 1 [2+1+1 v 3] - Winner
The pirate vessel's crew has no luck making any real headway charging your line. Your men conserve their strength and use the terrain to their advantage, forcing the pirates to continue to push down a narrow path. By the time the pirate captain notices the situation at hand, there is little he can do. With so little of his crew left, they'd never make it back to any port.

You have secured another ship and a Pirate Captain as prisoner. Your reward will be waiting back in port. The problem you face currently is that in the state of both crews, you can't manage a full crew for either ship.

((The following is subject to balancing))
New Ruling: Sea vessels captured can be crewed by a 'Prize Crew'.
-Prize Crews are essentially a single watch of your own crew, forced to run all watches until port is reached.
-The nearest port must be the first destination of any ship held by a Prize crew.
-Ships held by prize crew will move at half the rate of any normal vessel (doubling move cost) due to the lack of sleep and extra precautions that must be taken.
-The Sailor specialist must be replaced for any ship crewed by a prize crew before it can be used for anything else. Without the Sailor, it will sit in port.

Combat Rules:
-Prize Crew ships are lost immediately to capture or destruction by the attacker. Prize crew's will surrender immediately.
-Any ship with less than adequate crewing rates at unsuitable for real combat. A normal vessel loses 1 Str per prize crew (maximum prize crews equal to str-1. Therefore a Str 3 ship can have 2 prize crews and maintain 1 str.)
--Prize Crew'd ships have 0 Str for all intents related to combat or otherwise.

Grant audiences to the people, and see if there is any pressing problems or concerns.

[2/4/6] [4/6]

The general questions are raised about what is happening in Mileth. Concerns are not as high as you'd expect them to be given the threat of invasion, but many have heard the rumors of the nearly peaceful takeover of the city by the Empire. Suspicions are raised about the embassy as well. Nothing seems to be overly blown out of proportion and you appear to have done well to belay the concerns of the people. Many who believe the rumors out of Mileth do question the quite obvious military buildup within Ligoria. People are confused as to why the first action Ligoria would take is to show force over a peaceful occupation of a city that wasn't even allied to Ligoria.

Sail to Acre (Aching), buy pigs if possible. Otherwise buy grain.

Some time is spent relocating your ship and crew to Aching[-1 move], where [2] you manage to squeeze out an extra little bit of savings from a farmer in the area. Despite the winter markup of the livestock, you still pulled 1.6d in savings - costing you only 2.4d for the 'herd'.

Spoiler: Holdings (click to show/hide)

Action:Continue Sword Practice!
((since i believe it's been since last season since this was rolled - Please enlighten me as to the results OF that last set of rolls. I believe you're currently at 10/100 progress. I'll roll up your whole season at once here...))

[3/3/3/4/6] - Swordsmanship: 40/100
You manage to run your training this season without any major setbacks. You did however get so worked up with your sparring partner that you both nearly killed eachother. Your instructor was not pleased and spent the better part of the rest of that week chastising you both on the finer points of keeping your calm in battle.

Ite attempts to design a gun that can be easily assembled from a set of mass produced simple parts, making any improvements he can to the original gun design.

[2]You think you have a serviceable idea for mass-producing the device, [1]but unfortunately there isn't a blacksmith or engineer in the region you know of with the ability to do so at current. [3]A few beleive they could with some funding to increase their capability and manufacturing output.

[4-2]The actual mechanics of the device are rather intricate and you fail to see how you could improve upon them. [5] You also think it a decent bet that the .33d you spent on a single piece isn't far inflated from the labor and materials the gunsmith invested. To outfit a regiment with such a weapon would be prohibitive without the mass-production in place. You also believe a steady supply of iron would be required to create such a weapon on such a scale.

Karafs enters the tournament. Retcyl orders a dock and barracks to be built using his men.

[4/1/1/5/5]
Your men, while inept as hell, manage to eventually construct crude a crude barracks and Dock for the island. It isn't much, but it's enough to make the men less grumpy now that they no longer have to sleep outdoors in the Storm Coast winter weather.

Well at least they were functional. While the infrastructure of the island was important, there were yet other matters. Like if the smuggler had any connections at all...

Ask the smuggler if he has any connections or if he's part of a group.

William organizes a tournament celebrating his birthday...

[Starting Alt Char]

The person who signed up late that night had a lean and hungry look about them-like a wolf, almost. This person wore a face helm that concealed the greater part of their features save for a pair of striking steel grey eyes.

"I'd like to enter the competition..." was what they said, but there was something off about the tone...nevertheless, the proper mark was shown, and no one would acost the figure that night.

As the person turned away, they couldn't help but wonder at the irony of it all. Yes-William would get what was coming to him, that was assured, and the timing couldn't be more perfect.

Ask the smuggler if he has any connections or if he's part of a group.

[1]The smuggler, understandably, doesn't feel much like walking about his business ventures. [4] He does let on that he's not entirely alone, he has contacts. [3] Given he never spends long in any one area, most of these contacts are in various cities along the coast. [3] Given the lack of steady work he'll likely have in the near future, he's pretty sure he'll lose most of those contacts in the next season or two.

The "honest soldier" facade collapsed almost instantenously as soon as Nikephoros started to speak. Kathos knew well what type of man Nikephoros was.

"The first and foremost plan is to ensure the functionning of the Crown in the event of queen's indisposition, be it sickness, wounds or worse. If a situation as such appeared, Laythe has no one in the offical cpacity to replace her, as she failed to appoint a council. She prefers to keep us separated, and while a smart move when surrounded with a lot of nobles whom you put no trust in, there is only three of us, and we are all loyal to her without a question.

If Laythe was to be indisposed for whatever reason, then the council of ours could be poteintially declared official and taking regency. This is an extreme solution however and one we do not want to use unless absolutely necessary.

We are to work in the backgrund, all tending to our roles in perfect coordination. After liberation of Mileth, we can use the army that we built up to bring the border counties into our fold and force them to swear alliegance to the Crown. The whole peninsula that we share with Shola and Mileth is to become Ligorian.
Mileth will be peacefully occupied and declared under our protection from the Empire. Shola will be given offer of protection form the Empire and also joined with Ligoria. Both places will be given initial autonomy, which will be turned into direct rule by Ligoria after a while.

I will take care of the fighting, Avitus will work to sweeten the deal for Shola and Mileth and those lousy barons we failed to take over earlier. Baron Thunderblade will work to sell those ideas to the queen (obviously in a form of an informal and independent suggestion), and we all help each other's efforts when the need arises. Any questions or problems that you see?"

As requested by CyberGenesis:

Action:Tala goes back to sword practice. She concentrates on improving her defense and maintaining her calm in battle.

[3] Tala gets back to practicing, though is unable to completely focus upon the lessions due to her injuries.

10/100 Swordsmanship training progress.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
'Tala' was actually sort of happy to read her latest missive-even if she was almost exhausted after a day of intense training. Simon could be a real bastard when he lost his temper...

Pasha Dolgorouki would be helping her military efforts soon-how, the missive didn't say, just that he was soon to be available. She wondered how he had managed to pull that off? She and Pasha had met at a rowdy party she was working for information on her first job, in Dalannor years before-he had proven himself pretty clever and charming, and damn near exposed her as a spy, if not entirely on purpose. After a bit of...adventure...she had admitted to him who she really was. Instead of turning her in, he had decided to work for her.

She was about as close to a true friend as she had in a long time, and sometimes he was even more than that-a confidant, someone to speak with frankly and without deception-and someone who would listen to her honestly. Which, in her line of work was very dangerous. She supposed the day Pasha turned against her-and who said this wouldn't be the time?-was the day she could finally, honestly admit defeat.

Since the years from that fine time they had enjoyed each other in Dalannor, they had worked together on and off, usually when her job got a little too rough for spywork, and needed a swordarm and a keen mind to wield it. They worked well together, had some good times together. She liked to believe they both shared a need for risk and adventure that drove them to do what they did.

Then again, things change. He might be a different man then she remembered-times change, and so did people was the old worn out saying...but, she found herself hoping he would be the constant-something solid to hold onto in her world of false loyalty and promises made of smoke. Not bloody likely, her cold inner self lectured.

((OOC: I hope I didn't take too many liberties with your characters backstory/personality SC. Correct me if I did.))

(Nah, I'm fine with it. The only thing I would disagree with is being Dalannori in origin since I'm intentionally leaving that vague, although I have no argument with them having met there. ^^^ I'll take a few liberties myself concerning where Tala is at the moment, but nothing too extreme, I hope.)

Pasha finished packing his backpack and slung it onto his shoulder. So long, and thanks for all the memories, he thought, looking around the inn room of the sleepy little backwater town he hadn't bothered to learn the name of, barely a day's walk east of Ligoria. It had been a fun month and it was a shame to leave some of the people behind; the local 'magician' - who didn't actually know any magic but did have a few interesting tricks - was a font of stories and odd customs from faraway lands, and if he didn't spend the evening speaking with Adrian there was always the lovely serving girl, who had a ribald sense of humor and a rather pleasant disposition. Speaking of, he leaned over and kissed her forehead while she was sleeping, then left silently, closing the door behind him.

"I suppose it's time you were moving on," Adrian noted from his usual position near the fireplace when Pasha entered the common room. "Aye. An old friend could use my help, and I'm not one to keep a lady in suspense," he said, tossing Adrian a wink. The old storyteller chuckled quietly and shook his head, putting his book aside. "Take care of yourself, Pasha. The place will be less lively without you," he said. "I'll miss your stories. You take care of yourself too, old timer. I'm going to come back someday and if you're not around to finish the tale of Sir Keardwall I'll dig you up, paint you blue, and prop you up in the corner." They exchanged a final wave and Pasha stepped out into the dim light of the sun, which was barely peeking over the horizon.

He climbed aboard his horse - a chestnut colored mare - and nudged her into a swift trot. The time on the trail to Talama passed uneventfully, and he bypassed the guards at the gate by showing them a letter from Lady Alanis. Once inside, he dismounted and led his horse by the reins towards were Tala had said her residence was. A servant let him in and offered to stable his mare for him, and when asked informed him that Tala was in the library. "Thanks." When he entered the library, Tala had her back to the door, apparently looking for a book. Pasha decided to simply wait until she noticed he was there. It would be a good way to see how worried or preoccupied she was; she used to be able to sort of 'sense' when he was around back in Dalannor, and he was curious to see if their time apart had dulled that ability.

Besides... there are worse things to spend time looking at than a beautiful woman. He grinned to himself and leaned a shoulder against the door frame.

Ah, so he's not going to tell me, eh? And these contacts of his are probably important...And he did need some work to be done.

"Captain, I have a task for you. Continue with your smuggling and make sure your contacts are kept in touch. If you can, obtain some opium. I'm only giving you half your crew, the other half will be hatcuri. They need to learn how to work like you."

Send smuggler back to his smuggling. Give him half of his crew. The other half will be made up of hatcuri.

Unfortunately for William's birthday and anybody seeking to see what type of architecture William likes, there is no grand arena, no large coliseum. The ring is a few simple wooden  posts driven into the ground, with thick rope tied around them to make a roughly circular combat ring. A large plank of wood currently holds the rankings board. This is placed next to the racks containing thick, unsharpened wooden swords.
Thin white cloth fluttered in the wind, each with the name of a contestant. There is forty of them, a mix between Hatcuri and Crimson Guards, but strange enough, none of the sailors signed up. The audience places bets and is made up of sailors and off duty Guards. There is no judges, anything besides murder, removal of limbs, poisoning, kicking or whacking somebody in the groin, or lighting the enemy on fire goes, the winner is the one who can force the other person to yield first.
William himself is lazing against a rack of swords, wearing heavy armor -his only real handicap- watching the events with a small smile.
The first fight is William vs. Karafs.
There was an even number of fighters, and the current fights will be between the Crimson Guard and The Ambassadorial Guard. With the mystery fighter fighting against a Crimson Guardsman.

((Probably no one is going to roll for this.))

The last barrel of salted pork has been safely deposited in the ship's cargo hold. Lucius stretched and looked at the captain. "Well, it's time to go."

"Seems like you're making a small fortune here.", said Groleo, smirking.
"I wouldn't say 'a fortune', but yes, I expect to be paid quite a hefty sum for it. We can thank the heavens that Talama currently resembles a huge, gaping, ever hungry maw. I wish the Queen a hundred years of peaceful reign. As long as she sits on the throne, there will be no way I could not become rich."
"The best thing with selling food to the people is you can suck them dry in the winter."
"Yes. And they will still be thankful for it. The only thing I can worry about right now is that someone may also get past the 'paranoid bitch' façade and try to do business in that city, too. I'm still wondering why there is almost no one there right now. Apart from some minor wineries, almost no one there is doing business there. Only some minor peddlers."
"The Storm Coast isn't famous from its stability", the captain shrugged. "All those kingdoms may as well be razed tomorrow. We cannot even be sure that Talama is still standing right now."
"Well, that would make pork even more expensive, wouldn't it?"
Groleo sighed.
"What I wanted is to remind you about the payment."
"After we reach Talama and I sell the meat, you will get everything I owe you. And we will talk about the next season. As you can see... there is a lot of money in this."
"Just making sure you remember about that."
"You know, what kind of merchant forgets about his debts?". Groleo looked at him expectantly. "A dead one. Or imprisoned."

The captain nodded and walked into the deck. Lucius followed him, straightening his cloak. It was bitterly cold today and he already dreamed about the next tavern. Fortunately, on this ship he had a small, but functional cabin - and there were several canteens of wine hidden in the chest there.

Sail to Talama, sell the pigs.
