"And thus you reveal the one flaw in the plan. The troops will be weaker without the shields, and thus those shall not be disposed of unless the individual regimental commanders say so."

"As for the discipline, the commanders won't grumble, but the troops might. Still, if paying them extra will help, then it'll be done."

"I see..."

He paused for a few seconds.

"Are you going to make a military move against the force from the dragon empire, or are you only going to do some politics?"

((WHY YOU NO GET ONES.))

The other peasants wander off into the woods.
[5] The peasant puts up a bit of a fight, but your druids manage to gag, blindfold and tie him up.
[2+1] You manage to start a fire.
[3] The man burns after while,[4] and not one of the peasants come running.
[1] The man is dead but charred instead of unrecognizable. You should probably get rid of this body...those peasants might not like it.
[768] A sense of starving hunger comes over you, then passes before you can grasp what caused it.

"My queen, pikes in a tight formation do more than recompensate for shields which are frankly useless when facing cavalry. The enemy is pinned down and inconvinenced by them, while swords on our side are free to approach covered by the pikes. Besides, only one formation of your troops is equipped with shields, and those are moslty for individual, not group combat."

The idea to combine and mix pikes and swords in one is that they have the advantage of both whiel covering each other weaknesses: protection form cavalry and ability to engage infantry effectively.
I've seen many battles my queen, and had a lot of proactice with these things. I speak from experience, be it about the discipline or the tactics."

"And what about ranged weaponry then? What happens when the enemy sees that weakness?. And last time I remember three units having either pavises or tower shields..."

"No unit ever operates alone my queen. That is why your army has its own archers and cavalry that put enemy archers in danger. While the line moves forward, the cavalry flanks the enemy archers forcing them to move or widthraw, while our own missle troops screen our infantry and prevent enemy fire from becoming too heavy. "

"Only problem I see now is that the army isn't large enough. Of course I could do a bit more recruitment according to your guidelines this season. We have enough spare manpower to do so..."

"Our army counts 6 regiments in total, with 1 cavalry, one missle and 4 infantry, including my own. If the infantry could be reorganized along new lines and the cavalry and archers left as they were, the army would be more than sufficient to take on most threats. 4 regiments moving in line while archers and cavalry stop enemy fire.
But as you rightly stated, they would need to be bolstered with more men and we also need people to man the fortifications in captured places.

But all of this I leave in your hands to consider. I hope my explanations and plans were as thorough as possible."

"We'll need FAR more regiments. Two are to stay here as a permanent garrison. Other than that I consider your proposal acceptable. You may start these reforms immediately. If you need any resources to do so, just ask."

Look for an island to inhabit. Head to Shola. Look for an island to inhabit on the way. Preferably high cliffs except for a few entrances. Also good farmland if possible. Meet with William on the way.

[4] On your way to Shola you decide to take the scenic route and [3] happen to find a rather small island devoid of much life aside from Gulls. It appears to be off the usual traval path of most merchants. [1] The island itself is less than spectacular with hardly any arable land. You are, however, in a spawning area for several species of sea creatures.

((Island physical location is nearly smack in the middle of the water between Lechem, Polca(the one just east of Galam), Shola and Ligoria

The Arctic Fox always enjoyed the march before any battle. Plus the winters here were far more mild than he was used to. He was however still wearing his ridiculously ostentatious general-issued cloak. Sure it made him a target, and set him apart from the common infantry he was marching with. But he was relatively certain that a trained archer still couldnt drop him. Besides, its not like he hadn't survived nearly a dozen assassination attempts since he started at the Academy.

The steady march was fairly uneventful. No one wanted to engage the Dragon Empire and the path taken was meant to avoid every favorable battlefield for the enemy, while still delivering them to their target within a few weeks of marching.

They had stopped for the night, and the Arctic Fox stood upon a hill, and gazed upon the city of Mileth in the distance. A visible fiery blotch on the horizon, bordered by the sea. Their first target. The first step in his master plan...Not to die.

The Arctic Fox pulled out a piece of parchment and motioned for his adjutant to approach. When the man was standing beside him, he then read aloud.
"As winter descends,
Safe in their homes they slumber
Victory comes soon.

That, is how a real general does that flowery poem crap. I passed the class, I don't like hearing it. So stop it...Its pretentious."

"Sir..Are you aware of the cloak you're wearing?"

This question was met by a stony gaze, then a slight smile. "..I'm starting to like you, Adjutant. What's your name?"

"Its Talarous, sir."

Approach Mileth, Siege Mileth. Freely allow their runners/messengers to escape to the west or south. Capture all others.

(Man, Screw Haiku. Really.)

Approach Mileth, Siege Mileth. Freely allow their runners/messengers to escape to the west or south. Capture all others.

[5] Your men were uninspired by your poem, they were HEAVILY inspired after your scouts returned. The city is composed of basically three regiments: An archrey squad on the walls, a unit of heavy infantry and their city watch (scouts). Your men regret to inform you that they were spotted, but it seems to have forced the city to send runners. [1] The scouts seem to have missed a runner heading east, but [6] you managed to capture the rest heading anywhere other than west or south.

[3] The siege sets up without incident. No one in or out of the city since the runners, [2] the problem with this is that they are making an obvious effort not to negotiate with you. [2] Your men start getting paranoid about a large force coming to the rescue of the small city.

Right. Time to get to work, then. Measuring implements in hand, brain whirring, sketchpad ready, Hugo makes blueprints and an estimated cost for the conversion of the tower into a decent university.

[insert costs for university here] Current plans are roughly 2-4d plus a specialist or 2. I'm foggy on that part, its been a while since the costs were fresh in my head.

[2d+1e-1e+.5d+.5d+.3d] The building is in fine condition, which lowers the base cost to two ducats. Hugo is considered an architect and no other specialist will have to be brought in (Bah.). The sheds are in horrible shape and will have to be tore down and replaced with a dormitory and a Meal hall, each costing half a ducat to construct.
The workers and craftsmen will put the floor down for three tenth's of a ducat and do decoration on all buildings for another half ducat, but decoration is optional, of course.
[1/2]Luckily there is already a basement to the building.
The total cost, minus decoration, is 3.3d, this does not include books, eating tables, dissection tables, lecterns, writing materials, things to put on the dissection tables, tools, beds, or desks. This also doesn’t include Hugo’s pay.

However the benches in the lecturing room will be built in, as well as the podium, shelves in library will also be included in the initial package.
The building if started now will be done in [2] two seasons.

Tala continues the search! She has the Handler contact their man in the criminal courts and see if he's picked up any rumours. Also, she now travels armed and with her two guards...
[1] No one seems to know about them, and your travels through the city leave you empty handed as well. And you can't shake the feeling that you are being watched. [3+1] Yes, you're sure of it. There's someone following you. They aren't the worst at sneaking about, but if you look for them they are easy to spot. The man is probably from the Shriners, given that that's all you've been asking about recently.

See if he has a job.
Well, there's always pirates. [5] He gives you the latest news on pirate activity in the area- up to date information based on official reports.
[3] Not much in the way of more interesting jobs, though. There's a few insignificant bounties on the local pirates, but that's about it.

Head on and meet with William.
The journey is uneventful.
