Thomas walks through the city, looking for his would-be employer, Harold.

So you head towards the Robbers Flask, where the poster said to go. There a plump, long of nose and keen of eye man is sitting with a little sign strapped to his table. A larger and stronger looking man occasionally bounces unruly drunks away from the table.

Avitus wasn't pleased by the answers he received to his letters. But never mind, he knew he eventually would have to use be a little bit more persuasive with some of them "independent" nobles, but all of them? And that offer wasn't bad either. He would have taken it himself back in the days where he was well-established near Vasir, of course he wouldn't have had to because he was the first advisor to the Duke, but still... He sighed "Oh well, if I really have to, I guess I should tell the General to move his troops towards the border."
But before he met with Nikephoros, he had to tend to his own well-being: he needed students, students whose family could afford a ducat or two a year to see their children obtain high responsibilities in the Kingdom's administration. He sent a few short and too promotional for his taste messages to the richest families in Talama and around Ligoria, hoping to get at least five students to start with.

He then sent Henry to arrange a meeting between him and the General.

Thomas quietly approached the men at the table in the Robbers Flask. He pointed to the sign.

"I'm here for the job."

Harold the Herald looked hopeful.
"Ah good you can actually read. Name?"
The guard gave Thomas a mug of ale
"Can you write Legibly? Do maths and sums? Remember well enough? And know simple manners and courtesy?" Harold asked in spitfire Proper.

Firstly, did you honestly think that offer would tempt anyone? What you are asking if for them to give up their rights, land, and soldiers, in exchange for
-A one-year tax reduction. Except if they don't accept, they get to keep all of their taxes forever.
-Protection from bandits. Bandits? Not that big of a deal, at least not to nobles- they can deal with them themselves.
-A Ligorian nobilty title. Not sure if you've noticed, but Laythe doesn't treat her nobles very well.
-The right to keep those parts of their land that are too shit for the Queen. Alternatively, they can keep all of it for themselves.
-Not incurring the Queen's mild displeasure. Yeah, this is the only thing that might improve the offer- Psychobitch be crazy, yo. But they would rather take their chances.

For the university advertising rolls, what resources does the university have at the moment?

[1] Incidentally, that thing I mentioned? That was nothing, forget about it. Really.

Thomas politely refused the ale before addressing Harold the herald.
"My name's Thomas. I can write well. I'm not bad at arithmetic. I've got a good memory. And I have fairly good manners, yes. What exactly would you need me to do, though? That's a pretty strange set of skills to be looking for if you're setting up shop in a place like this."

Harold shrugged politely and wrote the name down on a piece of paper as well as most of what Thomas said.
"This place was cheap. I'll send a letter back to my Lord saying I spent all the money on renting a nice place to interview people and pocket the difference."
The guard looks at the Herald with distaste but keeps silent.
"My Lord William Varuarum- or more easily to pronounce, because I don't think I even pronounced that right -Blackrose, is currently looking for an advisor slash scholar to assist him in various things and details. The job will require you to write down names, do some incomes, advise his lordship on a few matters, read some books, and direct his workmen on occasion."
He pauses and catches his breath.
"The job will come with room and board, several weeks of vacation time and sick leave to be taken whenever you wish, one ducat a year payment which may be subject to postive change, and a guard. But his Lordship travels around, so you may not be based in Talama or even Ligoria for that matter. Sound good? Or should this guard bounce you across the room?"

Send promotional "brochures" to the richest families in and around Ligoria for the University.
[1-1=0] You never receive any replies. Not even rejections. It seems no one is willing to waste paper/messengers on you or your university. Perhaps having more (or, indeed, any) staff, and some properly refitted rooms, would enhance your reputation enough that people would say 'no' politely.

Fine then. Send a message that says he would like to speak with them on uncontrolled land. They can each bring guards, but no weaponary.
They agree. However, when you show up at the chosen location (a windswept hill of no particular importance), you see that they have brought 'guards' to the tune of 'a regiment each'.

Thomas grew visibly excited upon hearing mention of being assigned a guard. He quickly calmed down before answering.
"Well, I'm not too keen on being bounced across the room, so I'll have to accept the generous offer of Lord William... Blackrose. But wait. Let's say, hypothetically, that some men with very large weapons were to come after me, though -- would my prospective guard be willing and able to... convince them... to leave? I might have a bit of an issue with men with large swords who want my head. As long as that isn't a problem, I am fully willing to perform all of those tasks for Lord Blackrose."

"General, someone to see you."
"Let them in."

Nikephoros was alone in his small study, sitting on a chair with his legs on the table. He was in the middle of devouring the latest manual about gunpowder. That weapon had future, he thought, and he wanted to see someoen competent develop couple of gunpowder weapons for him.
He stopped reading to see and welcome his guest.

"Ah, its you Avitus. What news do you bring?"

((I was totally expecting that.Heh.))
On a windswept hill
"Huh...clever people." William was wearing his leather armor and had quite a few knives hidden in various clever places and several bottles of brandy in his bag. He had only brought three guards with him however. It wasn't the old crew of Thom, Jan, and John, who were resting up in the castle.
Glad I brought the drinks. Heh.
He approached the circle of nobles with a small smile.
"Hello, I'm William Blackrose, and I would like to speak with you about something very important, it's mostly important for you...But first introductions..."

In the Robber's Flask.
Harold looks tired and his voice is bitter.
"You have a bounty on your head? As long as it isn't a Ligorarain bounty that the queen takes a particular interest in, then anybody coming after you would have to fight their way through William's personal guard regiment, and then through Wiliam himself, before they drag you off. William for all he's worth- Hah -keeps his promises..."
He scoots a piece of paper over to Thomas. Its a contract
"Sign here, if you want the job... You'll be heading out to "Vale" today if you agree. You have to atleast work till spring before you will be paid."

Thomas quickly signed the contract using his real name, Thomas Talboh (possibly a bad idea), as he spoke.
"Oh, don't worry. It's not a Ligorian bounty. From what you tell me, Lord Blackrose sounds like a man of honor, and I can't wait to meet him. If that's all, I'm ready to make my way to Vale."

"Alright Tom, here, take this to William, he'll likely be in the castle at that place. This Guard, whose name I really can't remember or care about,"
The guard shot another look of distaste at Harold.
"Will escort you there and be your personal guard. I suggest you get any business you have to do done in Talama. You might be there a while."
Harold picks up the sign and leaves the Tavern.
Leaving Thomas sitting across from the guard.

"Firearms, hey? I know quite a bit about their conception, I used to to the maths for an uncle of mine who built them. It's not really efficient, I only we could make them in greater quantities..." He stopped, realizing this had nothing to do with the matters he wished to discuss. " But it's not what I wanted to see you about. You surely remember our little talk about the expansion of this great kingdom? Well, the first phase of diplomacy has failed, so I will need a little help from your men. If you could oblige me by pushing you exercises just behind our borders, especially near the territories of those nobles" He hands him a list along with a map.
