At the throne room:

"So, Hyte, I'm going to be abrupt here, but what happened to my messenger?"

Hyte bows to the Queen in a nice and fluid motion, "Well Your Highness, He simply didn't want to leave Shola. It is quite beautiful there, few that visit ever do wish to leave. Your messenger was also encouraged to stay in Shola to speak in great length about Ligoria and Yourself. However, my Lord didn't want to offend you, so I was sent to explain..." Hyte fidgets a bit before continuing - "I was bidden to convey a small gift to you -" He tosses a bag to one of your guards, "- and to convey his appologies for your messenger. My Lord is quite interested in what Ligoria has to offer in an alliance."

"Ah, I guess that explains that. Well, when you return tell my messenger that he's gotten a promotion to be my diplomat there." Laythe motioned one of the guards to bring the bag over to her, as she wondered what was in there. "Well, money, protection, power among other things. What did your lord have in mind?"

Hyte nodded, "I'm sure your new diplomat shall be pleased to hear of his new promotion. In regards to what my Lord had in mind? I dare not speak of his thoughts Your Highness, but as far as what the people of Shola are looking for in any alliances are those of assurance of safety, confidentiality and of course the support of their allies." [5] You notice him smile as the guard brings you the bag while he continues to speak... "Our people are quite skilled in various things that make us valuble to our allies, few as they may be. Our own people, however, have little talent for combat. We are mostly simple folk with a penchant for tinkering with what is available to us"

Laythe gave back the bag to the guard and motioned for him to open it. "Well then, you may tell your lord that  Ligoria is willing to offer it's blade in shola's defence. However, you might want to give me specifics on what shola can provide Ligoria..."

If I get Thunderblade's permission, I go and see if there are any issues among the people and find out how many lesser nobles live here. See if there are any problems with bandits or the such. Or if there are any plagues and strange illnesses.[/b]

[1] The 'issues' are those of most peasants - they're peasants. Those that live here seemed to have had it harder than most under their previous lords. Their morale is nearly destroyed and few have any real hope that their new lord will be much better. [5] Bandit issues are minimal, but there are reports of the usual bandits on the trade routes. The peasants seem convinced that if roads and guard patrols were set up that the bandits would leave the area since it wouldn't be so easy. [1]
There seems to be some sort of a plague ravaging the crops in the area (-1 to resource count and 10% less tax generated unless the issue is cleared up). The people are unsure what it is, but they're concerned this could lead to starvation if left unchecked.

Laythe gave back the bag to the guard and motioned for him to open it. "Well then, you may tell your lord that  Ligoria is willing to offer it's blade in shola's defence. However, you might want to give me specifics on what shola can provide Ligoria..."

The guard opens the bag and removes some stoppered vials and bottles. Some contain liquids, others powders or what appear to be fine sands. The guard is simply confused [6] he seems to recognize the vials. [2] You, however, are confused bcause you don't. "Shola has a great many talents for the unconventional, Your Highness. Many of our people are raised for the sole purpose of training in the more subtle arts - mixing, distilling...research" Again, Hyte seems to become uncomfortable speaking on the topics. "My Lord has requested that the finer details of any alliance between our respective people should be handled in a more personal matter. He wouldn't presume to require your audience, simply the overworking of, at most, a clerk. I have been given commission by my lord to act as a diplomat of sorts on his behalf to yourself. I am also tasked to be the personal runner of letters between you both. My Lord likes to keep his secrets even from those of us in his personal service - He even pens his own letters to other heads of state." He seems to brighten up again now

Retcyl was in the fields, examining some grain...It was sickly and non-producing. In contrast to William's estate, business here was terrible. Best to alert Thunderblade while he tried to fix this problem.

"Scribe, I need you to write a letter to the lord and bring it to him right after. Ready to record?"

"Yes, ambassador."

"Your estate is suffering. Plague in crops, starvation and less tax likely. Minor banditry on roads. Morale is low and the people dislike you."

"That's it my lord?"

"Yes, best to be brief. Get it to him now."

The scribe bowed and ran off to Thunderblade's office.

"Karafs, a word with you."

"Yes, ambassador?"

"Search the camp for any experienced with the diseases of crops,; be they farmers  or scholars. We should have a few farmers who joined the expedition. Also, ready my guard, I plan to find these bandits...and speak with them."

"Yes, ambassador."

As Karafs left, Retcyl hoped that this plan would succeed

Send message to Kathos telling him about the problems of the estate, and get any former farmers or scholars to look at this plague and try to to find a solution. Travel with a small guard, along the road with any riches we have laden and showing. Have regiment following some distance away. Once bandits come, try to speak with them.

"My Lord? No, My lord is very good to me. Our people just have very tight restrictions on our...work." Hyte eyes the guard, who eyes him back looking slightly annoyed - and fearful. "We are a private people, and as I said - My liege will only speak of specific information in a more restricted and formal capacity. We try to keep our...culture, private and close to ourselves."

"Very well then. My guards will escort you to your quarters."

After the audience with the sholan:
"Guard, what do the vials contain?"

Nikephoros was a absorbed by the matters of his regiment. After all, they were at Queen's employ now, so apart form skills they had to be at least presentable. He got his men to sew the holes in their jackets, clean their coats and shave. Royal barracks were a fine accomodation, although the men residing there weren't especially well trained despite their high-sounding names. "Guards" and "citadels". Grand names that Nikephoros saw often on the banners of many units. They all fell the same when his men stretched their arms out, ripped the banners from their enemies' hands and then pierced them with their pikes and struck them with their swords.

Yes, the deeds and determination flew higher than any banner could, and represented more than any name could describe. But these soldiers weren't his enemies, but allies and comrades to be taught. He may make true soldiers out of them yet.

But for now, an assesment of the surrounding forces and kingdoms was in order. Queen Laythe was cleverer than Nikephoros first thought.  But that did not make up for her lack of battle experience, something that Nikephoros was well aware and willing to alleviate.

Head to the throne room for audinece with the queen.

Even Send Hugo a sarcastic invitation, knowing he will most likely decline.
Whaaaaat you do not understand Hugo as a person. You think he's some sort of recluse artist? Hell no. Hugo is a hedonistic, immodest, opinionated douchebag, who could not possibly think of declining an invitation to show off his work in the court, eat a free meal, and tell all the noblepeople how their clothing is so last season.

Hugo will be there. I'm not sure how you want to set this up, but anyone arriving any later than the very start of the party will be able to see Hugo chatting away with some courtiers, explaining how absolutely fantastic his artwork is.

The battle had been far to easy. It had rather been a massacre, but Corv was even more displeased at the ridiculous low amount of loot found among the bandits, although that could have to do something with the enormous army of Goum. At least they didn't seem to interested in the bandit corpses up to now. Suddenly a jolt of pain rolled through his leg.

ARGH!

"Calm down, the arrow is already out now just the cow-piss to desin..."

Cow Piss? COW PISS? What kind of Medicus are you? Bring me clean water and not thrice be damned Cow piss!

"Well dont blame me if by the morrow your wound will fester..."

Get. out. of. my. tent.

loot the corpses, and on the way back try forge potential alliances with the nobles, hold lookout for contracts. When back in Goum sell the armors and weapons taken from the bandit corpses.

On the bad side of things you smell rather like cow piss, on the positive side of things your fearsome enough no one dares question you as you lead your group of mercenaries back to the bandit town[5], getting back in is easier than you would have thought as nobody tries to stop you, in fact the camp seems rather empty.[2] Not that it matters for the corpses had already been removed of their weapons and armour, each of the houses your men search had also been cleaned of valuables. You shrug and head back to the city. ((Goum doesn't exist I don't think  :-\ there's Moun which sounds similar although I remember you saying you were heading north, so that'd mean Galam, which also makes sense as it's a military state.))

Once there you report back to commander Zach who commends you[3] and invites you to a celebratory feast, this may be a good chance to meet potential employers.
