[6]

Tala picks up the dagger with a wry look, balancing it with both hands and testing the edge-mostly ignoring the jewelry completely.

"Finely weighted...excellent edge. Beautiful and dangerous..."

At that, she rolled the dagger dexterously in her hands, then tossed it lightly into the air...catching the hilt on the way down.

"Thank you William."

William smiled when Tala tested the blade.
"Your quite welcome. I thought it fit your personality quite well though, Tala. So, since you like it, can I ask you a favor?"

Ligoria. Previously caught up in some sort of bloody calamity. Bound to be again. Sir David had insisted that they stay away from this place for a reason, but Terryn was in charge now and the money Sanguine had offered was worth the risk. Besides, the Mad Queen was gone. To where, nobody seemed to know. And with Galam pulling its troops back and some other nation reportedly prepping for war, there was bound to be high demand for men such as the Thornbred. For now, though, he'd just set up shop. Maybe take on a few small jobs until his employer had need of him again.

Terryn and some of his men go tavern-crawling in Ligoria, spreading word that they're willing to take on small/odd jobs if the pay is right.

Tala smiled, leaning toward William once again, languorously. The blade was hidden out of sight. But not gone.

"You may...

How can I help you, William?"

"I really want to know about you...we haven't talked much on that topic...actually, we haven't ever talked about it..."

Tala tapped one long finger to her chin, blatantly feigning confusion.

"Well, ask what thou wilt William, and I may answer. After all I know so much about you...it's only fair."

William's smile twitches slighty downward.
"So, were does your family come from?"

Tala didn't blink.

"My family is from here in Ligoria, naturally. We've tended our land, serving it's people and rulers as they came and went, for as long as we bothered to carry the records.

If you wanted ancient History, the Alanis family once lived in lands somewhere far to the Southeast of here. That would be about...ten generations I think..."

"Hmm...Interesting, so you grew up in that lovely manor out in the country?"

Tala nodded and leaned, letting one hand aloft.

"Indeed.

Born and raised. Can't say I never tired of it...my Mother mostly kept me at home, tutoring and schooling mostly."

Tala raised one eyebrow.

"You cannot imagine. Every day, etiquette, manners, politics, strategy, courting, fighting...

But, I am nothing it not resourceful-and I could find relief, when I desired it...they could never quite keep me in their hands as much as they thought they were.

I did develop a knack for getting out of tight spots, or into them."

She leaned forward and placed a hand on Williams knee, grinning.

"You'd be surprised the wealth of diversions one could find..."

William didn't flinch or move when Tala puts her hand on his knee. William thought of smirking, but dismissed the thought and delivered the next phrase with a flat, but still smiling, expression.
"I too got into many tight spots when I was a teenager...although the people I was with at the time seemed to enjoy it..."

"But what sort of diversions did you get into? Hopefully nothing like the sort I got into."

Tala withdraw her hand with a lingering touch, speaking airily.

"Honestly? Heart breaking and petty crime. And a little arson once, but it wasn't intentional...my parents would pay for all the damage, and give me a free pass if I got into trouble, but for me it was the challenge of not being caught in the first place.

I was quite good at not getting caught."

"Whatever did you burn down...?"
