bins for high-quality-item stockpiles
« on: September 28, 2011, 06:00:54 am »

Are bins used in a stockpile regardless of the custom settings for Furniture?

For example, if I limit a stockpile to only take stone finished goods, and of those, to only accept Masterwork or Artifact-level quality, will there ever be any bins placed in the stockpile to contain the finished goods?

not sure about the quality, but wooden bin are not used in finished goods piles where i disabled wood as a material. It's annoying to manage trading stuff for elves, I have to check items one by one.

I tackle it the other way. I know what my fort is producing so I set the stockpile to only receive (of certain quality threshold) amulets, figurines, earrings, etc etc. Then if need be filter for materials too but you can probably always leave wood on as you never produce anything made from woodcrafting to sell anyway (not when there's all that stone which is the same price).

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

Whether or not bins are used in a stockpile is controlled from the bins/barrels screen for the stockpile and is unaffected (AFAIK) by the stockpile settings.

Y'know what'd be useful? Being able to tell a garbage dump what it can and can't take. I could dump all my metal ores and flux down near my forges, all my other stone near my masons/stonecrafters/mechanics, all my wood near my carpenters...

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

Thanks everyone for your help. When my food crisis and total lack of security get figured out, I'll do some experimenting to see what the verdict is.

Sure, it'd be useful, but quantum stockpiling with garbage dumps is a teensy bit unrealistic. If we ask for it to get even more useful, it might go the other way and end up getting fixed.  :-\

I try not to use quantum stockpiles in useful ways.  I'll use them to clear an area except for a tile or two for the stockpile.  Otherwise, I use piles to get things where they need to go.  I have a metal stones only pile near my smelters, and that seems to work well enough.
