Got a better way to move large volume materials (like coal) or very heavy materials (like stone, ore or metal) very long distances (hundreds of miles+)?  I'm all ears.

Mine it all, layer by layer.

Then rebuild the entire world in just metal. The ultimate megaproject: Bronzeworld.

No, I want something fun, not something that is going to want to make me die or boredom.  Besides, the magma sea would cause...  complications...

It's obvious. Use it to kill goblins.

I'm talking a massive tower complex, filled with bridges and hatches and lots of traps and shit. Goblins go in, GIBLETS go out!

First, defeat the clowns.  Then, build Hell.  That eerie glowing cavern is not enough: Magma pools, towers of iron and brass, heaps of corpses and miasma-spreading refuse, hideous upright iron or steel spikes, chains on the walls and cages in places of particular torment -- the whole fire-and-brimstone deal.

You can't defeat the clown. Their numbers are near infinite.

It's still mostly pointless. I say go with the goblin-killing application.

Of course, as you kill goblins, you'll be harvesting goblinite. More metal. It'll just keep growing, until eventually it covers the whole world...a breeding camp of gobbos at one end, a massive mountain of carcasses at the other.

All with troll fur socks.

Actually, that would be frame-rate death regardless considering my fort is at 278 dwarves and climbing (but still playable, due to clever pathfinding solutions).

I'll start a new fort and do it.

My first thought was to try to mod metal->booze and metal->food reactions into your fort.
Then, if possible, mod out normal booze'n'food stuff.  Possibly replace with agriproduct->block style reactions.

i.e., to build, you need to farm; to eat and drink, you need to mine!

However, not messed about with all that, so much, so not sure how viable. :)

This is a copper biscuit.  It is made with finely minced copper and exceptionally minced zinc.
