oh. Obviously I'm not very good at this game, so we could sneakily revert to the jan 1 1840 autosave
There's no need for that. We have 6k research stored, right? And it takes 7.2k, so we wouldn't have been done anyway. Seeing as how we'll get the tech around jan 1842, I think we'll still be among the first to discover it (if maybe not the first).

It says we have accumulated 6606.0 research points in July 1841.
And in the autosave there are 3300 points on Jan 1st 1840

The only 1840 tier research ideas that we have unlocked are Idealism and Early Railroad.

I think we want idealism. What are the effects?

edit: the wiki doesn't list any events (or was it "discoveries"?), but that is the tech I was talking about (RP bonus one).

Idealism gives you +50% rp.

Does this mean I should continue from 1841 anyway? I never knew it was best to save research points...

If you don't have surplus RP saved up then you might as well continue from 1841.  I'm surprised that you don't however.  Do you have the education slider maxed out?

Yep.

August 7th, 1841
Researh begun on Idealism, should be done in November because of extra research points.

September 11th, 1841

Sicily sent us another alliance, which I accept.

Jan 1, 1842

Railroads are being completed.

Does this budget screen look alright?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And what should I do about research now that Idealism is finished, I've had no research since november of last year (460 rp points)

Feb 17th 1842
Ottomans increased their opinion of us to Neutral.

Hike the taxes up to max and cut the maintenance down to 1%-2%.  Money in the bank will be put to good use later when you build railroads.  Railroads would be a decent next project but you could also consider an army tech.

Wrong again, we need Freedom of Trade: +50% on raw resource production (which more or less means +50% lower class income.) . Unless we actually plan to go to war in the next few years, that one is a must have.

I don't know about you, but in vanilla I generally go to war with the ottomans as soon as they are at war with someone else.  You never know when that will come.

Railroads have the advantage that they boost factories as well as RGO's.  RGO output is alright but it doesn't boost your score like factories do.

Ah, yes, but we already have railroads, and now are are in debt because of it (still worth it, though, in the long run). Plus Freedom of Trade is dirt cheap (3.6k RP Vs 7.2k for the railroad tech you want).

The debt is pretty managable at this point.  Plus the peasants could be squeezed for a bit more to pay off the debt.  Most of the spending at this point is being wasted on unnecessary military maintenance.  But the score boost from industry might push us into great power status which is worth quite a bit more then an income boost.

What's the point value of Great power #7 on the list? And what is the status of those prestige boosts from idealism?

also:
the peasants could be squeezed for a bit more to pay off the debt.  Most of the spending at this point is being wasted on unnecessary military maintenance.
he's right you know: until you get any decent tax collection techs, taxes for the lower classes need to be permanently nailed to 100%. Similarly, unless you plan to fight in the next quarter, military maintenance needs to be 0%.

I vote for... are there any OPMs around us? If so, we should look into killing them.
