Thanks for the replies so far--I'm hoping to hear more opinions on the matter. Another name I've been throwing around is Xenocorps.

FYI: "Earth Defense Force" has already been used by several games, including an X-COM spinoff that never went beyond the planning stage, and a series from Japan which is more or less a third-person X-COM shooter.

What about "(The) Organization (X)"? Or "(The) Group (X)"

Crap, I had such an epic name, but sadly it only sounds so good in Polish. (with a R.O.O.T. acronym)

Another name I've been throwing around is Xenocorps.

That sounds good, too.

Xenocorps is good. It can still use the majority of the back story you wrote, as well.

Anyone of the equivalent to the royal bloodline in a nomadic group would have a sun tattooed on their hand, or a scrotum on their forehead (it's a little-known fact that fraternities are based off of long-forgotten tribes).

I'm not a huge fan of Xenocorps. For some reason, the various Xeno-named games always rub me the wrong way.
I'll try to think of something fun. Right now, my brain is only coming up with silly names like "Earth Immigration Bureau", "Crop Circle Critics", "Soldiers Against Cattle Experiments", "SETI: The Sequel" and "Black Suits".

EDIT: First serious name attempt, "We Are Not Alone", "First Contact", "Final Line of Defense"

I'm of the general opinion that subtitles are best used in sequels or other non-primary versions of something, otherwise they tend to lengthen the name unnecessarily.

For some reason, the various Xeno-named games always rub me the wrong way.

I'd have to agree with you on "Xeno-" prefixed names, which is why I didn't even mention that one in the first place. I, too, have had an inexplicable aversion to them, but seeing as how there aren't a lot of good options out there for the taking, Xenocorps at least fits and is unique (for those reasons I'm perhaps leaning a little bit in that direction right now).

The other names you propose still seem to fall into the generic/cheesy/cliche category. For some reason it's quite difficult to come up with something compelling that isn't ridiculous... Yesterday I posted this on the blog, and while considering different ideas that afternoon, Hot Pink Elephants from Space Ate My Pajamas actually popped into my head... that was definitely a WTF moment (and got me laughing, of course ;)).

Some of the fun names out there would be nice to go with if I wasn't aiming to give the game a serious theme. I like the idea of Earth Immigration Bureau ("Welcome to Earth! You may die now..."), and I still remember Areyar's "UFO: ASCII Unknown" (although the game won't eventually be ASCII only).

I haven't heard (or thought) of anything that strikes my interest any more than the existing options, but there's still plenty of time to let the news get around and hear more opinions. (I wasn't planning on even bringing this up quite so soon, if not for the unfortunate fact that my original blog post couldn't be published so I wanted to come up with a different topic to fill the void.)

I didn't know this had a Bay12 page!
I think the name change is a good idea, can't think of anything though.

Yeah... I actually couldn't come up with anything good. I know I eventually will, that's how I help my girlfriend title her books... but this is surprisingly hard :P X-Com has a way of overshadowing everything.

6EQUJ5: Alien Contact
"Wow!" That's a good one.

Didn't know about that. The year fits pretty well to the time period I'm currently targeting, too. I must say it sorta fails the pronounceability test... I wonder how well a name like that would actually do for a game, given that the average player would definitely not remember it. Memorability is a somewhat important factor for ensuring that a game gets around.

I guess it has the advantage of sparking curiosity for those who don't know what it means (most people, I would imagine). Having some actual history behind the game story is pretty cool, too.

One of those cool suggestions that I wish would fit all the parameters so I could immediately say: "THAT'S IT!" But it's not quite that name. Hm. Of course, it will likely be impossible to find a "perfect" name in the end--going to probably be unsatisfied with some factor or another... We'll see what more people say. In any case, I'll definitely add that to the formal list for consideration. Thanks 10ebbor10!
