I kind of like the reimagined alien forces. The chryssalids actually look cool now (instead of like fat rabbits :|) and gods damn, the sectopods are intimidating. Gameplay-wise, of course, it's just too watered down, but I can't say anything that hasn't been said repeatedly already.
To be honest, just getting a good remake of UFO Defense would be a great service to X-COM fans everywhere. X-COM is legendary for a reason, but it's old, and it has it's share of bugs and frustrations. Even a modern clone would be perfect, and taking it further with modding potential is just amazing.
And, of course, I hope you get your hosting back soon ;~;

To anyone who only recently found the game, I've set up a download mirror since the primary server was hacked and time to restoration is unknown.

(I'll also be uploading Crazy Cow's new total conversion some time tomorrow... probably.)

A question, is it at all possible to open up larger than 60x60 areas via modding or is that been resolved to a hard coded limitation because while I totally respect wanting all maps to fit 'neat ud tidy' into the display, I reconsidered that this system could be much more fitting baseline to build a particular scenario mod I had in mind than my previous attempts with Dwarf Fortress.
I was just thinking on this again and thought I'd bring up the fact that while larger mission areas will be limited to multiple connected maps, remember there will eventually be a geoscape as well, which I believe should be capable of areas as large or small as you want (though combat on that map will be limited to vehicles).

Just out of curiosity, what other kinds of mods are in the making? I know someone was contemplating a Doom mod, but I'd like to know what else is in the making right now.

Wow, just had my best game yet of Area 51... I managed to take down that goddamn colossus, with a rocket trooper named Helga who had dropped her woefully-ineffective launcher in favour of a laser & plasma pistol combo.
Somehow, a dual-wielding nutcase standing admist the ruins of the walls and no doubt yelling defiantly managed to stop the thing's rampage. :P

Even more amazing was the efforts of my gatling laser soldier, Yoko, who stuck to the ship and managed to kill a simply ridiculous number of aliens all on her own, after all the others were dead. She made good use of a proximity grenade, too. She even survived when a silacoid got up close and personal with her, thanks to a floater's poor aim taking down its ally.
Not to mention the sheer number of plasma shots she shrugged off before eventually going down to a lucky shot from a muton.
That was great fun, I've been playing this a lot lately and who knows, maybe I'm getting better at it.

Glad to hear it Yoink! Sometimes a soldier or two in the Skyranger can be pretty good since you've got perfect cover from all sides except one. Only problem is no room to retreat.

I am working on an alien base assault mod, but it is pretty far from playability.

After playing several times and getting completely destroyed by chryssalids, I took a bit of a break and came back after an hour. The secret is, you guessed it, methodical and paranoid advancement. The moment you start, cover every corridor with at least two soldiers. Set up a firing squad in a corner with your four best soldiers and use the rest to scout. Move in pairs, assume there is always chryssalid around the corner and go slow.
All in all, though, that was a pretty fun mission, and it's a welcome change from the urban environments every other mission takes place in ;p

I should point out Crazy Cow is playing Draxis' new ASSAULT mod, still in development over on the forum. It's not obvious from the mission record because, oops, I forgot to have the game output the name of the mod to that file--it still reads "CATACYLSM." (The mission end screen displays it correctly.) That will be fixed in the next release.

Just started playing some Agression last night, after several utter failures at Vanilla Exodus. :P

At first I did terribly, as all my orcs would start off scattered about and end up dying in ones and twos... But then on my third attempt I was all like, "okay, tactics tiem," kept all of my soldiers out of sight until they joined up to one side of the town.

I formed them up with all the melee soldiers forming a wall of death, with the archers moving slightly ahead on either side and shooting anything that got close. The elder, whose usefulness I discovered, remained just behind the main mob, ready to step out and blast any heavily armoured fools.

This worked incredibly well, with the archers shooting down the screaming peasants rushing about up ahead, the elder killing off guards and adventurers with ease, and anyone who actually reached the troops getting quickly chopped apart.
For a long time the only casualty was varg, who I'm guessing is some sort of warg? Anyway, I sent him ahead to scout and he was stabbed to death by a thief or something. Lame.

We basically flattened everything in the town with our tactical advance, the only injuries being received by our archers who were mostly protecting us from, surprise, enemy archers. The elder patched one of them up about three times during the attack before he finally died.
That was during our retreat though, when both archers were out of arrows and I'd deliberately placed him between the elder and an enemy archer to keep the former safe. He did his job well.

I have to ask though, is there any way to find more arrows after the start of the mission? The enemy archers don't appear to drop any. Whatever the case, it was good fun, and I was very successful for a change! :D

As it turns out, the pen was in fact a poor choice for melee combat in comparison to the sword.
So I just started playing this game and I accidentally nuked the moon.

The Blacksmith does indeed carry plenty of specialized ammo. You can unload the bundles from enemy bows, as well, and the thieves will often carry special arrows.

Yeah, they're wargs. Wikipidea said that the word 'warg' came from the Norse 'vargr,' and it was bastardized into warg or varg. I thought varg sounded cooler, so I used that ;p
