well, a zombie in current version will die usualy with just a severing or two. :) shame itll be a wile till toady brings out the next one or else derm may not be too happy to face it so early on.

Give me one of the peasants and make him a miner/furnace operator/weaponsmith. For extra practice, make him forge his own pick, too!

Okay, all dwarves pending for dwarfing has been dwarfed. Except Stronghammer, we currently have no male smiths (strange...) and only one male noble and it has already been claimed by me. I will give you one as soon as I can.

have we found any lava yet?

Not yet.

I would like to be a male cook/butcher/brewer/ and/or bone carver named Athra and would also like to be put in line to try my hand at ruling this fort. . . . . . . . Please.

I may post a save of this fortress at some point but this is actually community fortress, not succession fortress. There is also this problem of features not documented anywhere as the version of the mod I'm using hasn't been published officially yet, so it would be hard time for other s to figure out why something happens especially if it's not working as intended.

But, if you really want, at the end of this year (in-game year) I can upload a save to check out.  ;)

Give me one of the peasants and make him a miner/furnace operator/weaponsmith. For extra practice, make him forge his own pick, too!

Right now you have to use one of the picks we brought due the lack of coal. All of it went to produce the weapon traps and smelting iron...  ::)

Lol.

They do?  ???
Last time I dealt with zombies and undead in general they were nearly impossible to kill. That was several versions ago though...

Under consideration. Why do you think I bought some nice decorated rune iron war picks to you?  :P

Please dorf me as Nix, male warrior, speardwarf.  Full time Spartan soldier.

Also, I'm wondering why we're using traps.  I know its a staple dwarven defense, but this isn't a normal fort.  Ignore this, if it's irrelevant.

I really hope this fortress can become like actual 300 Sparta.

25th of Hematite, year 103

Our grand dining hall is finally ready. And when I say ready I mean it has all the furniture, floors and walls are smoothed and engraved.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

There are lots of engravings of different things, like artifacts, gods and whatnot. But especially two engravings caught my attention, both were made by Karakzon.

The first engraving was about me getting elected to the position of expedition leader of this journey.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The second engraving is about the slaughter of first elves here in Combatbronze. The expression of the elf was especially funny.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Have to say, our engravers did fantastic job with the dining hall. I'm pleased.

3rd of Malachite, year 103

Now that our dining hall is ready I ordered our miners to dig deeper and search a source of magma. While they were doing so they discovered a huge cavern few floors bellow our fortress.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This didn't come as a surprise to me, though I didn't expect to find one such close to surface. Doesn't matter really, for now we shall seal the entrance there and continue digging deeper.

8th of Malachite, year 103

Oh crap!

One of our soldiers has gone berserk!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Apparently the poor dwarf had one of those moods but was unable to find enough materials. I didn't know about it so I have no clue what he was looking for. Now, when he went berserk Derm was immediately called. Unfortunately, before he was able to reach the insane dwarf, the mad one had already killed one of our citizens who just happened to be in a wrong place at wrong time.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Right after the mad warrior had killed the poor peasant Derm reached the site and killed him.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Now, as sad it is, Derm has eleven notable kills, one being a fellow dwarf. This is really a sad day for Combatbronze, fellow dwarves turning against each other.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

9th of Galena, year 103

Due the recent tragedy we were forced to make a graveyard where we can bury our dead.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I'm really saddened that we had to do this at this point of our history. I wouldn't be as sad if the both fallen dwarves were killed by accident or attacking enemy but instead our own killed them. The bodies have been buried properly now, may they rest in peace.

13th of Galena, year 103

Our courtyard has been finally finished!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The bridge connecting our fortress to the rest of the world is controlled by one lever, which was built inside our dining hall. It was built there, along other levers, because we want to be sure that in case of emergency there is someone close enough to pull the lever. Now we can continue our search for magma and walling of the cavern.

15th of Galena, year 103

Our miners were able to go dig few floors deeper when they discovered another cavern.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Two caverns so close to each other? How can the walls support such a thing? On the bright side, we discovered two huge underground lakes down there. I think I have some good plans for those, though those must wait. We shall continue digging deeper, we can't be too far from magma now.

4th of Limestone, year 103

I met the human merchants today. I have to say, their selections were quite poor. The only things that interested us were some metal bars, few logs and some barrels, one containing alcohol. Why did they even bother coming here without proper selection of goods?

I heard there had been some rat problems down in the second cavern. Luckily Derm went there so nobody was injured. The cavern is sealed now, so we shouldn't be pestered by those giant rats anymore.

5th of Limestone, year 103

Another cavern?! It's third one our miners have discovered so far! How many of those can be there between us and the magma?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Well, we shall treat this cavern like we did with two previous; we go straight through and build walls around our stairs. But seriously, three caverns?

16th of Limestone, year 103

Oh praise the Armok!

Our miners have finally discovered the great sea of magma!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And with magma came the adamantine!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

But, praise the Armok and all the holies, it wasn't just one vein! Oh no, not one vein, not even two veins, but three veins!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We are rich! Filthy rich! I can't wait to tell about this to our queen! There is more adamantine we could ever dream of!

Now, after we have celebrated this discovery, we shall immediately begin the construction of forges and furnaces down there. I know it's quite a climb to get down there and back up, but it will definitely be worth of it to get our metal industry running properly!

Done!

Also, relying on traps is just temporary until we get our military up and running properly. From several tests I have made with this version there will be many sieges and not all of those will be easy. I just didn't want this fortress to be erased immediately.

Cheers Bowie

I add you to the queue as we have no male soldiers left unclaimed anymore. Anyone not a child that is.

Oh ok, thanks for the dorfing.  Forgive me for my lack of faith.

Also, do you think it's a good idea to build a type of Thermopylae wall, with just one entrance?  Or something else to prevent the enemies from dodging.

The fact that we have adamantine already means the military will be very powerful, once we are trained and armed.

Yeah, I was thinking of building some kind of entrance beyond the bridge with only one entrance. There I will station our troops in case of emergency.

There are few problems with such thing though:
First of all the dwarves will charge towards any enemy they see, so they probably won't hold their post long.
Secondly, as different creatures may stand on same square, the effect is not like in Thermopylae as the invaders can just stand over each other and attack nevertheless. The strategy behind the Thermopylae wall was that only small portion of attackers were able to engage the spartans at a time, so the size of invading army was meaningless there. When added the superiority of spartan skills they were able hold out quite long. This, at least no completely, can't be achieved in Dwarf Fortress.

Oh, and by the way, I'm planning to form the military as thus: Two squads (for now), one formed completely from archers. Second squad is full melee but unlike in every previous fort I have played I will just mix up the equipment in that squad. This way all the claimed melee dwarves will be in the same squad and hopefully we have a slightly more efficient squad.

Cool thanks for dwarfing. Also do we have Potters training yet? Another part of spartan culture.  :)
