Last night one of my dwarves got possessed and claimed forge to create copper greaves. He did not use any coal. Is this a bug?

Not a bug. Strange Mood dwarves work in mysterious ways and don't let little things like "but I'm not using any fuel!" get in the way of their artifacts.

It's probably because only reactions use fuel, and artifact making isn't a reaction.

So, apparently, a thousand suns is sufficent heat to forge with.

Also, I think copper is soft enough in reality to be beaten into shapes without heat, though this leaves you with a weak final product that needs to be annealed to reform some of the crystalline structure of the metal.

They can also instantly turn one unit of material into enough metal to make an object that normally takes several.

Once I had a dwarf make an adamantine platemail, which normally takes 9 wafers, from 1 wafer.

He pounded it extra thin.  It's adamantine, so it shouldn't weaken it. ;P
