Dwarf justice?
« on: September 25, 2011, 02:51:24 pm »

So it's been a long time since I played DF and I have a question concerning the dwarven justice system. My Captain of the guard is a bit too enthusiastic with her dispensation of justice; she's killed three law breaking dwarves (the last one died from a single kick to the head!). Anyhow, I was wondering if there was anyway that I could make it so dwarves are imprisoned instead of beaten? I have set up some ropes to be used by justice, but I don't have the 5 it asks for. I think I only have 3 ropes set up.

I haven't really made much use of the justice system myself (my nobles all either have very easy-to-fulfil mandates or have very difficult-to-recover-from accidents), but I've found that if you arm your Captain with a wooden training sword then the recipients of any beatings tend to be absolutely fine - being lightly tapped with a wooden cudgel is apparently much easier on the skull than having a dwarven fist rammed through it.

An even better weapon would be an adamantine mace - it may as well be made out of styrofoam.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I gave mine an adamantine crossbow, and assigned a squad of similarly armed marksdwarves to him, that way they can let my civilians live and kill enemies at the same time.

About the chains: IIRC only metal chains/cages can be used for !!JUSTICE!!.

Own question: does Legendary status mean an immunity to some, or all, punishments? It'd be neat if mandate faliures didn't send people to jail (relatively easy to make them legendary miners) but potentially fatal if the same goes for tantrums.

it helps to took at your captain of the guard's basic stats. Make sure hes extremely weak and quick to tire and giving him a candy cane to dole out ‼justice‼

You can use ropes for restraints - I found this out recently when setting up my first Jail - but from what I've read they're not recommended as stronger prisoners can break them. :)

I don't know who invented this rumor, but it is not true. A tantruming dwarf may break a pig tail rope, but he'd break a steel chain just as easily. Material strength does not matter for destroying buildings.

Have dwarves actually be known to tantrum after being apprehended and tied up..? I've seen prisoners starve on the chain.

Either way, set up 3x3 jail cells with all the amenities- a bed, table and chair, as well as single-square food and drink stockpiles, with a chain in the middle. Finally, build a door at the threshold of the room.

This way your prisoners will be kept in good spirits, helping to "rehabilitate" them before their release back into society. If one does happen to break his restraints, you should get a message and pause, at which point you can just lock the door until you are ready to dispatch the guard.

Thank you for the correction there then. I'd read it on the Wiki and therefore (wrongly) assumed that it was true.

Nope, I've never seen that and have no idea if it's even possible. I don't think so, otherwise prisoners would escape regularly as many of them are in a bad mood, unless in a more luxurious prison. I've only had one rather unfortunate accident where another (no prisoner) dwarf tantrumed and demolished most of the furniture in the prison.

I usually build my prison in 3x3 cells as well. A bed, a table and chair, food and drink stockpiles and a chain in the middle, so the prisoner can reach everything. The walls are masterfully engraved too, so most dwarves are ecstatic after a few days in jail. Kinda strange to think about it: normal dwarves have to work all the time and live in 2x2 bare stone rooms at best while convicts hang around all day and do nothing but enjoy the absolutely sublime engravings...  ???

Eh, nice! If they don't use the business end of the weapon (i.e. bolts), wooden crossbow woul be a fair compromise between "not too rough on the criminals" and "useful against the occasional goblin". Especially since "hammerdwarf" doesn't go up too quickly on crossbowmen.

Thanks! Will test it in my current fort (I just prevented them to use *Steel spears*)
