Beasts, Titans, and all things deadly...
« on: September 24, 2011, 09:39:56 am »

Hey Guys,

I've been playing DF for a while now, and have loved it.

But recently ive been very bored with it, as i can never get past the setting up of my metal industry, as something always goes wrong, and i am getting very bored. This is usually because of my FPS.

By the time i have most my fort up, my FPS is at about 1<fps>10. This is with only 40 dorfs. It's pathetic. And un-playable. I heard you need at least 80 dorfs to trigger events like beasts ect.? (Or something else that will be impossible for me anyway)
And i really want to encounter one of these, so i was wondering if you could change something so these beasts or whatever can start spawning at anytime/alter the no. of dwarves needed?

Thanks

What kind of computer are you using that leads to unplayable lag with only 40 dwarves?

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

A laptop.

A single core, Intel Centrino, 1GHz piece of crap.

So yeah, it doesn't deserve to live.

Yep, you can edit the tresholds upon creating a world and in the entity and creature files...

Turn temperature OFF, that might better than double your FPS. Embark 2x2 or even smaller and game should be playable with 80 Dwarves (if your current experience has been with the default 4 x 4 embark with temperature on, that).

Well theres 2 things you can do.
1: You can lower the grahical FPS cap in the init.txt file which will increse FPS. General if you half it you double your FPS (Give or take a few) The trade off is movements are not as smooth.
2: You can lowwer the population/wealth needed for a megabeast/semimegabeast to attack in the creature raws. I recomend both of them in your cause.
Also getting megabeasts/semimegabeasts is intirerly random. Once I only saw a single giant(and a few FBs but they dont count:P) after around 10 years. And another time i got a minitor after 3-3.5 years. So ya basicly it all depends how long your fort has lasted but if you make the beasts able to attack at such low wealth/population that you would barly be able to trade you could have a challage on your hands.
Hope this helps. If you got a question let me know.
EDIT: Oh i know this last part sounds crazy but try embarking w/o a river. I know it sounds crazy but fiuld flow KILLS FPS. Besides you can get water from the caverns or pounds.

Any thoughts on how this can be abused?
Around these parts It's called weaponized

You can reduce the number of caverns to 1 (default: 3). This will cut down on pathfinding and wildlife. Also worth checking out is nanofortress for a 1x1 embark (if you can take it).

You might also look at what else your computer is running. Shut down everything in the tray. Do a virus scan, then disable the virus scanner.

Yeah, thanks for the advice, but it's all stuff i do alot due to my slow speed.

However i was still wondering if anyone could tell me which section of the raws to edit for the beasts?

Nanofort allows a 1x1 embark, so a lot less space to worry about than a 2x2.

It worked for me just fine:  Run DF, run Nanofort, change embark size to 1x1.  Nanofort has no output when you run it.  If you run it again it asks if you want to unpatch your DF.

You don't need to alter the raws to trigger megabeasts. Just choose "Create a world with advanced parameters" at the title screen. Make a small (or tiny) world, and press the button for change parameters (it's "e" off the top of my head, but I could be wrong). Go down to the Pop needed for megabeasts and change it to, say, 30. And voila, megabeasts with lower populations,

You can also edit the wealth needed, the amount of them and other such stuff from that screen.

You might need to edit the raws for gobbo seiges (although they might run off that number too). Sorry for the vagueness of the info, no PC until tomorrow.

If you want more carnage you can also get some mods like fortress defense II (though it may not be friendly to FPS), it radically increases the amount of sieges.
