But then you'd be unable to buy low, sell high. You'd have to buy high, and hope to sell higher.

It'd do away with the leeches and only leave the legitimate investors. Losing out the ability to make a "quick buck" with no labor investment isn't the best argument against something.

Legitimate investors don't buy low and sell high? Jesus.

Legitimate investors buy stocks to hold longterm. Speculators rely on "buy low sell high"

fuck the speculators.

"buy low sell high" is NOT INVESTING, it's a parasitic activity that generates no GDP or value.

Short-selling should definitely be banned considering it's an inherently destructive practice.  If you're profiting by destroying rather than creating wealth there is a problem.

Should we ban gambling as well?

Most states already ban gambling, as I recall.

Odd that state's rights are only important in some cases.

I don't see why we just don't ban it all together. Investors are the furthest away from the working of a company and know the less about it, yet seem to have the most power over it.

I'm sorta neutral on gambling. I don't like it, but I don't see any effective way to ban it.

I will say it's the best way to show how fools and their money are soon parted.

They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

I like investing...

I think it probably just needs more restrictions/regulations for things like day trading and short selling.

Gambling doesn't destroy wealth, so there's no comparison to be made here.

Short selling = "You make money if you can cause damage to a business" (you can also predict something else causing damage to a business, but the incentive to fuck up the business is still there)

Gambling = "You make money randomly"

So there's a pan-european general strike happening today.  I hear it's the first event of its kind.  Looks pretty big.

Wait, what? I must've really been isolating myself even more than I thought, because I've heard nothing of that. What is it for? By who? Damn, so much to look up now.

Yeah... participant countries I've seen mentioned:  Spain, Greece, Portugal, Italy, Britain, France, and Belgium.  Coordinated general strike.  I know the strike is extremely widespread in Spain and France.  I saw a picture of a major rail station completely abandoned supposedly during rush hour.  Hundreds of flights cancelled.

According to this article there are solidarity marches in even more countries.

Really?  I've kinda come to see this as a multi-purpose thread for protest and corruption, and the progressive thread more about prejudice and related social issues.

The strike has a Twitter and The Guardian has a page for live updates.
