I am resigned to the idea that the US will eventually collapse under its weight of debt which now is close to or passing the GDP in interest payments.
Uh... no. We do not currently pay $13,000,000,000,000 every year in interest. However, our total debt is right at or slightly above the GDP. We don't have a 100% interest rate. (If we did, I would bet that we'd be doing everything in our power to lower that debt.)

He has a point, though. The entire financial system, not just the US one but the global one, exists in an unstable and unsustainable state. It'll all come crashing down and have to be restructured eventually, and probably before 2100.

That's the good outcome. The bad outcome is that it comes crashing down and we can't restructure it and start killing each other instead.

It's the same thing over and over throughout history.  A minority of the population hoards resources until the majority can no longer survive and have no choice but to tear it all down and start over... and over... and over...

@Barbarossa: Yer right, I was mistaken. I didn't realize that the US GDP was that high...that or my brain selects bits of information and processes them in a fucked up way sometimes. I think the former is correct, though the later has merit also :P

Maybe what I was thinking of was the amount of surplus funds that we have each year after the gov't's budget gets ahold of it. If I'm wrong I'm wrong, but oh well I'm wrong about a lot of things heh...

I think that a poet (Robert Frost maybe) said it best in "Fire and Ice." I personally favor fire above ice as the means of the world's destruction; first with the downfall of governments, then riots and rampant uncontrollable death by mobs of pissed off people. But then there will probably be a restructuring and a new way of doing things...

SalmonGod: Was it Queen Elizabeth that said "Let them eat cake"? And then her head got chopped off? Either way I think I finally understand the executions of the Aristocracy "back in the day" since the peons were finally fed up with being treated the way they were, and decided that enough was enough. It might come to that again but in a different form with today's aristocracy, the politicians and business tycoons...

'Twas Marie Antoinette that said that. As far as I know, people generally liked Elizabeth.

yeah... lol I feel like even more of a Goober now... I knew some person in the Aristocracy/Nobles said it but I couldn't for the life of me remember. A lot of the time I am like that and it makes me sad. My brain says 'no' and then points me in a related but often screwed up direction for my information... need to make my brain more like a computer... put something like a FAT32 file system into it :P

Thanks for clearing that up for me :D

She also didn't say it, it origined as a rumour from her (noble) detractors and was then picked up by the common people as anti-royalist propaganda. But yeah, it's one of those "too good to not pretend it's the truth" kind of stories.

I'd have you know you're in the presence of true nobility here though Galen, and I'll stand for no ill-speaking of your betters-by-blood! When the Neo-Feudal tide turns, all you rabble-rousers will get what you deserve :P

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Let them eat cake... made with Corn Syrup, Hydrogenated Oils, Artificial Colors and Flavors, and lots and lots of Preservatives.

Personally I'm wondering a bit about what if any effect the movement on the establishment so far. You vote for the Senate/Congress/local stuff (I really don't know my American government system beyond top level) in Autumn as well, right? Any politicians catering to the "OWS" people? Do you have any spokespeople going up for vote themselves?

The democrats seem to be focusing a bit more on OWS-related issues like taxing the rich over the middle class and ridiculous college loan stuff, but I'm not sure how much.
