I am not even slightly surprised.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Its actually really sad that bay12 offers better and faster coverage of international events than a fair portion of professional journalism. I noticed this during the arab spring in particular, and the japan tsunami was another case.

...You do know that we get all of our news from professional journalists, right?  None of us here are doing first hand reporting, we're just good at finding a variety of professional sources, and all of them Internet based.

That's true, but it's better than television news, bad news is weeded out faster, first hand accounts are found quickly, international events are given links for local news to get a better picture of the situation, stuff like that. During the natural disasters hitting Japan, I spent 30 minutes watching Television news to literally glean one small mention of the disaster. The vast majority of the rest were obnoxious, useless pieces of not-news.

Even if it's nothing more than a bunch of links and first-hand analysis of first or second-hand accounts, it's definitely more reliable the televised mainstream media. The articles found on the internet are usually better, but it's really nice to find compilations here and I appreciate the efforts of those here who keep me and others up to date.

Speaking of weeding out un-credible sources, what news source do you trust? I like Think Progress, but as a... well, progressive blog, they're quite a bit biased in which news sources to talk about. I do like a few articles they pop out, though, and they are at least significant enough to do interviews and get some attention.

As for accomplishing nothing...

Occupy Wallstreet has a higher aproval rating among americans than either the republican or democratic parties...

This could be a real revolution enacted through the system. I hope so hope anyway.

The US at the heart of an anticapitalist revolution - how sweetly ironic that would be.

This isn't about anticaptialism, or at least it shouldn't be. Capitalism is not what has failed us. Capitalism, real free and open capitalism, did wonders for the world and brought about economic prosperity for millions upon millions. But the US doesn't function under real capitalism, at least not anymore. Almost no one can go out and carve out a business for themselves and succeed by the sweat of their brow anymore.  Monolithic corporations make expanding into any field that isn't on the cutting edge all but impossible, and the few who do are almost all eaten up by said monoliths through lucrative contracts and buyouts.

Hell, Toady himself was once offered 300,000 dollars to license the DF trademark to some unnamed company.

These days, corporations function in a manner that is not unlike the aristocracies of the old days. Many of the same elements are there. Corporations buy one another and grow in power with contracts like noble families did with marriage, they control trademarks and production like nobles controlled guilds, and of course there is all the disregard for human rights and general dickery. Neither are very fond of there being a middle class, either. This ever-warring "Corptocracy"; that is what needs to change.

It costs 300,000 dollars to develop his game... for 12 years.

(Sorry)

And no matter what you say, I'm willing to bet there are plenty of anticapitalists involved in it anyway :P

"Capitalism, real free and open capitalism" is exactly what leads to monolithic corporations. You need at least some level of government oversight to prevent it. Your (as in the USA's) problem lies in that the oversight has been lacking, misdirected, or directly blocked. Fix the oversight, and you'll start to fix the problem.

"Free and open" meant "you can start a business without being drowned with money to sell it to a corporation". I completely agree on the need for regulation to prevent this sort of situation.

Yeah, but what kind of oversight? Do you go straight for the state-owned company, or just go for some tighter anti-trust laws? What are you supposed to do to "solve" this problem?

Wealth consolidates....

We can let it go and then redistribute occasionally when it gets too extreme, or we can redefine the boundaries of ownership and how that relates to society.
