Apparently there will be state troopers at Occupy [My Town]. There are only going to be a couple dozen people there. In a town of 5,000 people. I wonder what they think we're going to do, riot? There aren't enough of us. I wasn't too worried when it was just the city police, because I know all of them personally. State troopers are a bit more worrisome.

On the other hand, I've never been peppersprayed before. Silver linings!

I'm at work too. 

So far nothing major from what I can tell. Raleigh should have kicked its occupation off about an hour and a half ago. All is quiet on the ATF side, not that they'd have much to do with any of the local police responses anyways.


As to the China-US war nonsense derail, I just have to say....srsly? I mean, SRSLY? I am disappoint.

No one is going to care enough to occupy Raleigh. I like this city, but really, there isn't much in the way of socially militant attitudes here.

Other countries generally show a lot more enthusiasm when they do stuff like this.  Greece is especially hardcore.  Americans just kinda mill about.  Walking from Point A to Point B with pre-approval of authorities is seen as the height of rebellious activity.  Anything beyond that is seen as some kind of radical extremism.  I do understand why so many people wonder what they hope to accomplish.  Not to put anyone down too much.  I'm really just glad to see so many people doing anything at all.

Disclaimer:  Not glorifying the violent stuff, either.  Just noting the differences in attitude.  Much more passive here.  People have this attitude that you have to stay within the lines, even when you're protesting the fact that the lines are drawn around your neck. 

I think torching buildings and street fighting with police likely hurts your cause more than anything, but the opposite extreme isn't any better.  There has to be a middle ground.

Unless a riot happens, that is. Detroit still seems to be in the process of slowly dying due to the 1967 riot. It's literally to the point that the crime rate is decreasing because there aren't enough people left to commit crimes against in the ghost neighborhoods.

Wouldn't that middle ground be... kind of just milling around?

If the milling around takes place on forbidden space, sure.  The stuff I like the most is the marches that go places they're not supposed to -- like inside of banks or up onto billionaire's doorsteps.  Non-violent but still pushing boundaries and demonstrating that this is a confrontation and not just a bunch of people standing around complaining.
