Getting back to the title: Apparently the NYPD are preparing to kick everyone off of Zuccatti Park (the main Occupy location) tomorrow morning, just announced today, citing that the public space has become too messy with garbage.  So the protesters are planning to make a broom-wielding human wall (and clean the place up), and the AFL-CIO sent out a mass email to all of its members asking anyone who could possibly show up to be there.  Other unions are following suit.

inb4 NYPD plants 'attack' officers with their brooms, forcing them to 'defend' themselves.

I signed and this is what I said:

"Congress shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

SHALL MAKE NO LAW is the strongest possible expression used in the Constitution of the United States of America. There is nothing more important. Removing the protesters violates the fundamental principals that are the cornerstone of American freedom and governance and makes YOU a violator of the first law of this great nation.

Eh, I just said "Don't use a technicality to evict the protesters - if you disagree with them, confront them and prove them wrong. Don't prove them right."

Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

I am trying to find a local occupy rally that I can contribute to on weekends. I cant seem to find one. I'm in NW Florida and can travel to New Orleans occasionally.

Googled 'Occupy Map' and got this.

I see two occupy locations marked in/near New Orleans.  One each in Mobile, Columbus, Tallahassee, and St Augustine.

There are also plenty of ways to participate online.  Great way to start is on occupystream.com.  Last I checked, there were 16 different occupy location livestreams on there, and only a few of them seem to have less than 100% uptime.  Talk to people directly on site.  Start spreading communications and just get into the dialogue.  I've been hanging out with Occupy Indy when I have time after work, just to help them stay awake through the night.  They're not allowed to sleep where they're set up (on the steps of the state house).  They have two vans parked nearby where they're sleeping in shifts, and most of the people I talked to the night before last had been up for more than 24 hours.  There's not much for them to do to stay awake there, so it's rough.  They take turns on the livestream, where they talk about what's been going on and look for input on future plans.

Here's a link to the Facebook page of Occupy Orlando. It's about as far away from somewhat-NW Florida as New Orleans.

There is basically no chance of that petition not hitting their target.

Great job, Truean! You're the only lawyer I know who moonlights as a superhero.

For those of you interested in preventing the Zuccatti eviction, here's a petition. They're aiming for 250,000 signatures by 7AM tomorrow when the police show up, and right now it's at ~93% of that. I don't know if that'll actually help matters, but it'll be a PR shitstorm if the police just go and do it anyway.

[blush] I appreciate the praise but don't know if I deserve it. Thank you.

Those protesters need to make that park god damn spotless and photograph every inch of it. They need pictures of them cleaning it with toothbrushes. They need pictures of them having a lovely meal and eating that meal off the immaculate sidewalk. The need pictures of them setting places for the police officers and graciously inviting the officers to join them while offering the officers a set of tableware all bundled in a white napkin.

I have my doubts that the NYPD will be able to get them off of that park without starting a riot. And if that happens, New York City is going to be in chaos for a while, given how high tensions are right now.

The need pictures of them setting places for the police officers and graciously inviting the officers to join them while offering the officers a set of tableware all bundled in a white napkin.

On Occupy Indy's 2nd day, an anonymous person dropped by and made a huge order of pizza for everyone and then left.  No one even got the person's name.  Later, someone told me about how he went up and offered an officer some pizza, since some of it was just going to waste, and the response was "No thanks.  That would actually count as bribery."

That would be great, but not likely without undermining the sentiment to the officer.  :)
