So today is the one year anniversary, and there's plenty of action in Manhattan's financial district.

Here's a decent sized photo album of the event.  Note Jill Stein (green party presidential candidate) serving pizza to protesters.

I think there's been 60 arrests so far.

Fun stuff.

They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

I'm glad this is still going, but its a little depressing that it seems like no changes have come of this.   :(

Yeah, I'm not really sure which historical parallel to look at here. The civil rights movement took years before anyone really took it seriously, but it eventually did have a huge impact. But then your 1970s leftist movements tried to push further left in a lot of areas and not only failed but probably contributed to the resurgence of the right-wing in the 1980s.

Jury is still out, I suppose.

Occupy has accomplished a lot, in my opinion... just not tangible/institutional changes.  It's brought certain issues and a general awareness about the state of the world into focus in the public consciousness, and it's introduced a ton of new language that has spread quite far.  Those are major accomplishments.  It will just take some time before we feel the tangible effects of them.  The ideological conflicts at the core of this are still being collectively processed, and no one can say what will come of it in the end.

There have also been some very successful direct actions.  Occupy has shut down some environmentally destructive industry operations, such as mountaintop removal or fracking sites.  They've also prevented a decent amount of foreclosures.  There's other things I can't think of off the top of my head.

I doubt they'd care. They have a "right" to coerce you through force, after all.

Extra helicopters, police presence and a lot of career protesters make the normal throngs of looky-loo tourists that much harder to navigate today.

The protests so far:

The good:
1) Creating awareness about wealth disparity. Globally and nationally it is an epidemic that has preceded the great depression before and is building to it again.

2) Demanding more responsible profit:humanity ratio. Companies like Apple who utilize strategies that endanger humans consistently while posting record profits in an economy like this are abhorrent.

3) Keeps most of the crazier local population in one place. NYC has a significant population of borderline personality disorders, narcicists, sicophants who gravitate towards protests in an effort to win friends and identity, etc. It's easier now that they are off the subway.

The bad:
1) A lack of a singular, clear message or goal. (it is mostly bitching for bitching's sake. Want to make a difference? Structure, develop a unified manifest and apply political pressure through the channels that get things done. Right now the protestors are fapping off about a dozen wildly ranging topics to tourists and bored journalists.)

2) Getting lumped in with all the homeless who wear signs and shout absurd things to people who happen to pass by.

3) Want equality? How about you stop interfering with the working class' ability to get to work? If you really care about equality of opportunity you should stop skewing against those who are trying hard to make a wage.
