well, that's a step into an interesting direction

personaly I believe this is only possible because they broke the speed of light
with that out of the way, science can do anything

YAY! Dream recorders might be in the works. This can get pretty interesting once mastered. So long film careers. Provided audio also gets translated (We already have visual mind reading, now for the audio/inner-vocals), this can get really crazy provided enough time and effort is put into it.

Have someone with plenty of crazy recurring dreams occur, edit the footage, and compose it all, and we have ourselves blockbusters out the wazoo.

Now let's take a look at that dream thread again, and imagine if we can submit videos of those descriptions and share the experience. Wow.

Maybe I would actually be able to release Alien 3(: Redux) like I watched in a prior dream that was actually a good movie (as it was supposed to be set on Earth) compared to the original Alien 3 we were stuck with (prison world).

With this hurdle finally out of the way of humanity we can finally make advances previously thought impossible.

We might one day develop a non-corrupt politician.

But on topic I think this has been done on cats or other lab animals before. Just scanning the vision centers of a test brain and reconstructing what is seen. It was a blurry mess but still pretty cool.

Now that would be a miracle of science.

I used to joke that I wished I could record the images that I picture in my head....IT WAS A JOKE, YOU GUYS!

Like the author, I'm simultaneously excited and terrified of this.

Add to that the recent development of bullet-resistant skin by dermal layering of spider silk, and I'm beginning to think life is resembling a game of Shadowrun.

That's beyond any mortal means of access. It's impossible to make such a thing exist. It would take an act of God combined with miracles of science to conceive such a thing.

My thoughts on reading this: "Cool, now I can record my dreams!"

My family's thoughts on reading this: "Oh god, now the CIA will be reading our minds!"

This is just going to get blown all out of proportion by the media now I reckon; it's a shame because it could be a really useful and interesting piece of technology if it was developed. It's a shame people just react to stories without reading the details (i.e. visual centres != innermost thoughts, AFAIK).

Fuck conventional reality, FTL communications, Bulletproof people, thought reconstructors. Science!

Also, those images are very disturbing. There was at least one that had a bunch of what looked like words scattered around it that weren't in the original image. Maybe reality really is a horrible nightmare that our brains filter out.

I think all the words are all the different conflicting thoughts on what to replace the words with (expletives, parodies, alternate languages, typographic alternatives; all in a horrible blended cocktail mix). If anything, I'm not too shocked at all the footage. I consider the "Fog" in the recordings to be how we perceive things unless we're absolutely certain of our perception of it (or visible free will). Which also means, in plenty of cases, dreams may come in clear as day, or slightly foggy (especially if it's lucid). Depends on how much control we actually have over our dreams.

I can imagine creative people will be pissed off to see nothing but blobs in their recordings because they keep adding or subtracting things as they create them, whereas neutral-minded or indecisive people that go with the flow would have almost no change in their perception, because they repeat what they have seen; sometimes to the pixel. That's my thought on that subject so far.

In a sense, I realized, this kinda supports some of my thoughts on the Mind Reading topic. This is the visual spectra. I can imagine vocals and so forth would be just as messy and full of static. Though that static is more like thousands of simultaneous thoughts running in mind while talking to oneself or making a hidden snark at someone without actually saying it. Think of my earlier statement except in vocals now. Yeah...

Also, considering all this, Code Geass and What Women Want (especially if they not only hear the thoughts, but can also see them) have now been placed in HONF for me with this discussed now. It takes alot to creep me out, and this actually got me now. :shudder:

I thought it was interesting how different subjects had consistently different levels of image fidelity. The middle row was consistently blurrier than the other two, while the bottom one was consistently relatively sharp.

There's also a million and a half variables involved in the accuracy of the videos.  Everything from the tech used to pick up the readings, and if we actually know all the parts of the brain involved in dreaming, and if dreams actually represent reality at all.  The heavy presence of red in those videos was pretty strange too.

After recording this information, another group of clips was used to reconstruct the videos shown to the subjects. The computer analyzed 18 million seconds of random YouTube video, building a database of potential brain activity for each clip. From all these videos, the software picked the one hundred clips that caused a brain activity more similar to the ones the subject watched, combining them into one final movie. Although the resulting video is low resolution and blurry, it clearly matched the actual clips watched by the subjects.

Think about those 18 million seconds of random videos as a painter's color palette. A painter sees a red rose in real life and tries to reproduce the color using the different kinds of reds available in his palette, combining them to match what he's seeing. The software is the painter and the 18 million seconds of random video is its color palette. It analyzes how the brain reacts to certain stimuli, compares it to the brain reactions to the 18-million-second palette, and picks what more closely matches those brain reactions. Then it combines the clips into a new one that duplicates what the subject was seeing.Notice that the 18 million seconds of motion video are not what the subject is seeing. They are random bits used just to compose the brain image.

Visual Free Will in action. I just noticed at least 5+ videos are blended with every other clip translated. It's like a visual dance mix of Youtube.

The (air)plane turned into a plane (land). The black kid (with stethoscope) inexplicably turned into a white version of himself kid on a webcam. An old woman turned into a young man. The mind is strange; and makes you wonder about the subject(s) tested.

We gotta play a game of "Spot the difference" with the video. This can get interesting.
