I always assumed the beards are actually made from candy, that would also explain why you get strands when you process it and not the usual bars.

That would explain why you never get beards sailing off in an arc.
sveral beards sailed off in an ark.
they had to return because they couldn't ingest booze, so they re-attatched to the husks of their old hosts, returning function to them, they re-stocked their booze supplies and set off to explore the world and settle down somewhere.
only seven of them survived the journey, and thus begins DWARF FORTRESS!

Best.  Starting  Scenario.  EVER.

Meanwhile, the husks left by the beards that died degenerated into twisted, soulless vestiges of their former selves, becoming the goblins?

I would like to point out, to anyone just starting to view this thread, that all of the information stated here is absolutely, 100%, undoubtedly true. And is by no means, in any way, shape, or form, senseless rambling or idiotic speculation.

That is all.

Focused madness is the key. Other forums wonder how we exist. Peaceful, yet utterly insane.

when a dwarf makes a work shop (say a kitchen) he digs out a room and puts a rock in the middle.

How does the dwarf generate the heat to cook food with only a beard and a large boulder

That's quite simple.
You see, a Beard excretes a liquid which can heat Boulders to temperatures equivalent, but not exceeding, those of a fire.
Thus, by rubbing his beard against a rock, he can create a perfectly safe, fuel-efficient, stove until the job is done.

This is also how they mine: they heat the stone to a point where it shatters more easily. That is why more advanced miners can break through faster - they develop the technique to the point where they find the perfect temperature for each and every type of stone, and they can bash through a wall with a single strike.

That didn't last long, huh? Shame, cause binary's cool. Anyway, an important message: I will be changing my names on every username based thing I use to ASCIt on/around 10/1. Consolidating, I guess you could say.

Ok my fort had 2 babies.

The first baby was locked up with it's mooding parent whos project was destined to fail due to a lack of a certain resource...
The parent went berserk and the baby bruised his lung by punching it.

The other one was got washed away in my plumbing and killed a crundle.

Dwarven babies are superstorng.
