Underground Shrubs Un-Designating Themselves
« on: January 23, 2007, 11:41:00 am »

I've found that frequently when I select plants to be gathered along the banks of the underground river, they'll deselect themselves and I have to re-designate them for my herbalist to pick up.

While it's possible that these are immature plants and can't be gathered - I'm able to eventually after time passes - nothing in the shrub description indicates this - they all just say 'shrub'.

So the bug is either that plants that should be gatherable randomly un-designate for gathering, or that immature un-gatherable shrubs show no indication of their status.

Thanks,

More likely is that it's not the same shrub.  Over time, shrubs die, sometimes in as short a time as a month.  You can tell these because they become "dead shrub"s.  They still have the same symbol on the map, but are no longer harvestable.  What is most likely happening is a new shrub is growing near or over where the dead shrub used to be.

No, we're talking literally seconds after I place the designation, it vanishes, though I can place it again - also, this is happening for ten or fifteen shrubs at a time; they're not all dying at once.

Dead shrubs have a different colour, as well (brown instead of green).

I've noticed this as well; no idea why it happens.

It has happened before when a dwarf selects a job and then is unable to access it.  Were there gatherers in other components of the map that might have been selfishly turning it off?  They shouldn't do that now, but maybe they still find ways to do it.  It could also be something completely unrelated.  If somebody catches one in a save just before it happens, I'll be able to fix it, but it might be hard otherwise.

This was in year one, when I had only one herbalist, and he had clear access to the riverbank.

I'll generate a save and see if I can reproduce it for you; which files do you need?

Here is my save blurb:

toadyone@bay12games.com or somewhere downloadable
region#.sav + region# folder in some kind of zip/rar
any new objects that were added to the raw folder

Same problem, my workaround was to select the shrub until it was picked as a job (started blinking) at which point it wouldn't deselect.  With not too busy farmers (9) it doesn't take more than 3-4 tries :/

Of note, I saw this in both this version and the last version, three or four different forts had this issue.

Yes, I have definitely been seeing this, I'll try to see if one of my saves captures it.

It has happened to me when I've designated a large area of shrubs (in the 20+ range) at once. If I go through and designate them in groups of 5 or so, it doesn't seem to happen.

I think I've discovered when this occurs.  When the game recalculates what the dwarves can see, the shrubs by the cave river get undesignated.

Odd.  I'll check it when I can run the thing again.

I'm getting the same too. In both the current build and the previous one.
Most plants in the underground river region are refusing to stay selected for gathering apart from maybe 4 or 5.
