Fastest strange mood ever.
« on: September 20, 2011, 06:38:06 pm »

So, a carpenter that recently arrived in my shiny new fortress (the last one fell to the demon leader of a goblin civ, who left the fort's entire population laying on the ground, completely covered in blisters, unconscious and slowly suffocating/starving...fun!) was working on making some beds for other new arrivals. She was then taken by a fey mood.

"Bum," went I, "now I've got to focus on this rottin' bugger."

I moved her jobs to the other carpenter's workshop and unpaused.

She claimed the workshop, and immediately began construction of his artifact. All she needed were the willow logs that were already in her workshop.

Easy to please indeed!

My magma forges are at the sea, 120 z-levels below my fortress's main levels.

Whenever a forgedwarf gets a mood, I'm not worried that he'll not find stuff, since my fortress is 30 years old and so far I haven't found an item type I don't have. - but I AM concerned about him dying of thirst because (although the bar stockpile is on the same level), all other items in the fortress are 120 tiles away - and if he has to go across that 5 times, and he was already thirsty - I've had some close calls.

She has made Baladegom Likotizkil, "Coilnature the Inky Intricacies" (say wut?). An artifact willow cage with a picture of oysters in willow, worth 2400 dorfbucks.

It is symbolic of how we will be catching all the huge savage animals of this savannah once I get off my lazy arse and order more cages and mechanisms to be made (quite busy prettifying the fortress...ooh, statues!), and also symbolic of how she detests oysters. Maybe she's expressing a wish to see all the oysters of the world stuffed into one tiny cage? Maybe she was inspired by seeing the fort's entire puppy population crammed into one as she was arriving? I doubt oysters would care much about being stuck in a cage, but hey, it's her artifact...

That sounds like it takes a lot of walking to get any forgin' done. Have you considered pumping the magma up, instead of going after it?

(The dorfy solution to having to walk down a hundred-and-twenty flights of stairs is to build a massive iron pumpstack powered by windmills, obviously.)

Edit: I have ordered Baladegom constructed at the entrance to the dining hall/statue garden and will be cramming all the puppies of the fort into it instead of the measly alder cage they now reside in. Good thoughts ahoy.

See: Planepacked.  Dwarves seem to ignore all bodily needs while in a mood.  I believe this is a feature, because dwarves.

They don't seem to advance beyond the "thirsty" stage, in any case. Until the mood fails, at least. But really, if that happens, they're a bit more likely to die of whatever-may-kill-a-loony-dwarf than thirst.

Still, though. Pumpstack, Acetech. Chop chop.

Thirst (or hunger) is usually what kills a loony dwarf, unless it happened to go Berserk.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

You obviously don't let your goblin execution tower double as a suicide point for melancholy dwarves.

You've obviously never had a babbling dwarf wander into a conga line of giant badgers (clean-up was a bitch, lemme tell ya. Fingers are really easy to rip off, apparently, and they all need the putting-dead-dude-in-coffin-guy making a round trip for every single one of 'em).

You've also obviously never tested a berserk dorf against three goblin swordsmen (it went poorly.).

my fastest has got to be grabbing one rock from the quantum stockpile next door to the masonry and then starting.

This calls for you to bring some water to the magma forge, make a pond and then a well over it.

Course, 120 tiles down makes it rather hard to do that I imagine.

If you have it, you can take water from the third cavern layer, fill a cistern and then seal the drain with a floodgate then wall off the flood gate so a buildingdestroyer:2 can't get you.  Build a well over the cistern.
