I use overhead gears to do it.  Reduces the potential spillage with underside gears and makes any possible maintainance (due to that pesky troll that always gets through) easy.

Code: [Select]
=====G========G========G=== --> to load  -- Z+2
     |        |        |   -- Z+1
 (reactor)(reactor)(reactor) -- Z+0 and Z-1

Of course, I use extended reactor arrays, so 4-40 (rows - number of reactors per row) usually provides enough power for multiple magma pump stacks and anything else I can think of.

I can provide a more detailed schematic if you wish, but it will be in image form.
Needs to be vertical, almost staggered.  From pump stack A to B it moves west, then B to C it moves north.  I provided an image of the general outline of what I'm gonna have to do earlier...

By the way, anything new on the goblin front?
After the third ambush they kinda gave up it  seems.

That or they're preparing for a true invasion this time.

Oh, this is just the power SOURCE.  You can use a larger / smaller reactor series as needed.  This should be attached to the TOP of a pump stack (wooden axles + magma = !!FUN!!), and if there isn't room build it elsewhere and put a vertical axle up a few tiles away to get it there.  If you have enough wood to build the axles, you can get power across the map if need be.  But that's inefficient, so do it as close as possible.

Alternatively, if you insist, stagger it vertically like this:

Code: [Select]
(side view)

(To pump stack)
<--- ==G
       |
       G====G
       |    |
       |  [H2OR](reactor 1 topside)
       |  [H2OR](reactor 1 bottom)
       |
       G====G
       |    |
       |  [H2OR](reactor 2 topside)
       |  [H2OR](reactor 2 bottom)
       |
       G====G
            |
          [H2OR](reactor 3 topside)
          [H2OR](reactor 3 bottom)

(You may add or subtract reactors if you wish, but a horizontal setup saves you at least four logs per additional reactor)

There's a far easier way to violate the laws of physics for easy power.  IF your fort has an aquifer, that is.  Do you have one, Melissia?

In that case, go with Vehudur's design.  For the record; mine was simply channeling out the top of an aquifer (you need to breach it from above at two points) and sticking waterwheels.  Water will circulate between both aquifer points and you get constant stable power off the wheels.

As an aside, why do mydwarves automatically try to butcher animals but DON'T automatically try to brew drinks?  Geeze.  I actually ran out of booze because of this, but thankfully I have three stills so it's easily rectified.

Because you can lose all your food that way if you're not careful.  Just set one to repeatedly make booze and make sure you have enough barrels or rock pots to store it in.

Nope.

Do you have an underground lake that is connected to the map edge? If you use that water more spawns at the edge of the map, as you can loop the water back out the map (carve fortifications) you can use it as a power source.

How much food are you producing?  The dwarves might be taking those barrels to store fat and plump helmets in.

This should be attached to the TOP of a pump stack (wooden axles + magma = !!FUN[/quote
Unless you have nether-cap! Felt like it was worth mentioning, in case of future plans involving even more magma.  ;)

I'm glad I have yet to harvest any candy then.  For now, I'm working out the kinks in my magma chamber and the reactor system before activating the pumps.

I'm a bit tired of constantly having to expand my magnetite mine, so I admit to using dfhack's "dig out vein" to try to get the rest of the huge magnetite vein dug out .  Before I did this, though, I put down some supports, just in case.
